English Language Arts Teacher Job Description:
The High School English Language Arts Teacher is responsible for creating an engaging and academically rigorous learning environment that develops students’ reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills. The teacher delivers standards-based instruction through diverse literature, meaningful writing experiences, and collaborative discussions that prepare students for college, careers, and lifelong learning. Through high expectations, culturally responsive teaching practices, and strong relationships, the teacher fosters effective communication, creativity, and a lifelong appreciation for language and literature.

Individualize the learning for each student.

Students take college courses or dual enrollment courses along with required high school courses.

Teamwork:
Teachers report to the Head of School. Teachers have time and space to work with grade-level teams and content-area teams (PLCs).

Strategies/Expectations:
Establishing and communicating course syllabi, clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects
Maintaining positive relationships with students, parents, coworkers, and supervisors
Creating a safe, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment
Communicating regularly with parents
Helping students improve study methods and habits
Adapting teaching methods and materials to meet the interests and learning styles of students
Ensuring students explore various learning opportunities and career paths
Preparing lessons, units, and projects to address learning outcomes using the Canvas platform
Working with students one-on-one when they need extra help or attention
Ensuring equal access to the curriculum for all students
Ensuring all accommodations and modifications are implemented
Tracking and evaluating student academic progress
Leading parent-teacher meetings
Serving as an advisor to a group of students
Meet with students and families to select courses for the next semester
Managing student behavior
Proctoring assessments
Using assessment data to inform instruction
Supporting school-wide initiatives

Education/Training/Experience:
Minimum: Four-year degree and valid New Mexico Secondary Teaching License (or the ability to obtain such), with appropriate endorsements for the courses being taught.

Preferred: Bilingual English/Spanish. At least one year of previous teaching experience.Contract:

1.0 FTE – 10 Months

NMPED Teachers

Licensure:
NMPED 7-12 Secondary with ELA endorsement OR K-12 Specialty with ELA endorsement
