Work Schedule: 14-18 hours per week; shifts based on operational need of the organization. Occasional weekend and evening hours required; this position is eligible to work a hybrid work schedule. 

OVERVIEW

Associated Students, Inc. employs student-focused professionals with equity-mindsets. Established in 1963, ASI is a non-profit corporation guided by a student board and managed by full-time professional staff.  ASI is considered a part of the Cal Poly Pomona Division of Student Affairs with a dashed reporting line to Administrative Affairs. ASI serves the entire campus population, including over 27,000 students, by providing opportunities for student engagement, student employment, and a multitude of programs and services such as recreation and wellness, student union and activities, student government, and childcare. ASI operational support areas include human resources, financial services, information technology, facilities management, and marketing.  ASI is engaged in the work of being a learning organization. Currently, the guiding ideas of the organization are “under construction” as the team re-imagines its vision, mission, and core values. ASI is looking for dynamic team members who value team learning, co-creation, and adaptability to best serve the needs of our students.

Founded in 1995, the award-winning Marketing & Strategic Communications team maintains its creativity and dynamic marketing strategies through an experienced, talented team of students and professional staff in combination with the use of today’s most cutting-edge technology. Its goal is to connect their clients to their respective audiences with a fresh and innovative solution. Marketing & Strategic Communications not only serves all ASI’s internal marketing needs, but it also provides the campus and local community the opportunity to utilize their experience-driven, competitively priced, design and marketing communications services as well. Some of the services the team provides are digital bulletin boards advertisements, social media marketing, and design of logos, brochures, and posters.

POSITION DEFINITION

Under supervision of the Design Manager, the Senior Designer operates at the core of ASI’s brand identity. They are responsible for the development, creation, and maintenance of all visual aspects of our brand identity from icons to posters, from letterhead to multipage publications. The Senior Designer is also responsible for creating master files and design assets that may be adapted or used by the Junior Design team and others throughout the organization. They will perform routine and non-routine tasks requiring a high degree of independent judgement and decision-making in support of ASI’s dynamic communications and marketing team. This position will require an understanding of the marketing team’s various needs and dynamics and will involve close collaboration with various internal and external collaborators. Along with their creative responsibilities, the Senior Designer will take part in professional development through assigned tasks, video tutorials, and other methods of learning. While this position is designed for advanced Visual Communication Design majors (VCD) it is open to all qualified individuals.

A portfolio is required to be considered for this position. The portfolio will demonstrate a strong understanding of image manipulation, typography, composition, and image creation. Samples of logos, branded elements, posters, multipage publications (print or digital), flyers, social media content are recommended. Illustration samples are a plus.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES 

Creative/Artistic Responsibility

  • Provides customer service to clients in need of graphic design
  • Assists in developing, creating, and maintaining ASICPP’s visual brand identity
  • Develops and creates graphics to support ASI’s brand and visual identity
  • Creates master files that will be translated into various marketing assets
  • Finds creative solutions to evolve ASICPP’s marketing efforts
  • Explores alternative concepts for ASICPP’s merchandise and marketing efforts
  • Develops concept art, mood boards, and style guides based on creative direction
  • Creates web graphics and marketing collateral consistent with ASICPP’s brand image
  • Conceptualizes ideas both verbally and through sketches 
  • Assist with design updates and edits as needed
  • Prepare artwork for proofing and productions
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Organizational Responsibility

  • Maintains organizational file structure for all design related files
  • Communicates with requestors, clients, and Senior Designer Supervisor to complete projects 
  • Participates in and assists in leading team meetings

Technical

  • Takes part in regular professional development trainings and opportunities
  • Ensures learning modules are completed in a timely manner

Supervision

  • Documents, maintains, and encourages proper application of ASI’s visual brand identity

Collaboration and Partnerships

  • Works with Production team to resolve production artwork issues
  • Provides creative insight for projects related to print, experiential, environmental, social media, and digital media
  • Works closely with Senior Designer Supervisor, Junior Designers, and Production team to complete assignments

QUALIFICATIONS

  • One-two years' experience with Adobe Creative Suite
  • One-two years’ experience in the creation of graphic design (either client or academic based)
  • Preferred to have completed or to be enrolled in the following classes:
    • VCD 1321A Foundations in 2D Design
    • VCD 1312A Foundations in Drawing 2
    • VCD 2301A Typography
    • VCD 2321A Visual Communication Design 1
    • VCD 2370 Visual Thinking
  • Has an in-depth understanding of what makes a brand unique
  • Ability to work in a cross-platform environment (MAC and PC)
  • Readiness to grow personally and professionally
  • Self-motivated with strong organizational and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to operate a computer workstation using word processing, spreadsheet and other computer applications in use
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizing, graphic design and communication skills
  • Ability to successfully complete tasks in a fast-paced, changing environment
  • Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to effectively communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to maintain professional work conduct

  • Skilled in traditional illustration media, 3D, and/or photography a plus
  • Thorough understanding of different file formats and color systems, bleeds, crop marks as well as paper sizes, and weights a plus
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite a plus
  • Ability to satisfactorily complete a background check (including a criminal records check)

EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY 

Employment with ASI is open to any Cal Poly Pomona student who is eligible to work and has the legal right to work in the United States. In addition, student employees must be currently enrolled in a minimum of 6.0 units (undergraduate) and 4.0 units (graduate), international student employees must be enrolled in a minimum of 12.0 units (undergraduate) and 6.0 units (graduate) at the end of the add-drop period. Student employees are required to have a minimum overall and Cal Poly Pomona GPA of 2.0 and be in good academic standing with the University. Individuals enrolled only in Extended University are not eligible for hire. Exceptions to the unit load requirement are allowed during the summer term and for students who have applied for graduation for the current term.  

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk and hear; manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination, and verbal communication; use of office equipment: telephones, calculator, copier and fax. Must be able to walk, stand, bend and lift to 45 pounds.
