Position Summary:
The Surgical Scheduler is responsible for scheduling ophthalmology/retina surgeries for the doctors with surgery centers and hospitals, counseling the patient, verifying insurance on surgery patients, collecting co-pays if required, preparing surgery charts, and posting surgeries with the various facilities. The position requires a good understanding of retina practice and insurance coverage, considerable attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively with patients, surgeons, co-workers, and supervisors.
Essential Functions:
- Maintains surgical schedule for surgeons, ensuring that surgeries are scheduled in a timely and efficient manner.
- Communicates with patients about scheduling, pre-op and post-op testing and visits, insurance requirements, surgical consents, facility ownership disclosure, transportation requirements, financial requirements, and financial hardship assistance.
- Contacts facilities to schedule surgeries and coordinate necessary pre-op testing.
- Schedules pre-op and post-op visits and coordinates paperwork.
- Calls for necessary pre-authorizations and ensures that all necessary information is collected and verified prior to surgery.
- Maintains patient confidentiality and ensures that all patient information is kept confidential at all times.
Skills and Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree in healthcare administration or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in a medical office setting, with experience scheduling surgeries preferred.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office and electronic health records (EHR) software.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and insurance verification processes.

Physical Demands
- Good computer skills. Able to navigate between screens: able to accurately enter data. Able to type 30 words per minute

- Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (gloves, face mask, etc.)
In office environment with controlled atmosphere. Possible exposure to staff or patients with communicable diseases and blood borne pathogens.
