What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineering Associate position at Associated MetalCast?
We are currently seeking an Engineering Associate to join our fast growing team! The Engineering Associate provides hands-on technical support for manufacturing processes, tooling, equipment, and Engineering projects.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support Manufacturing Engineering projects by setting up, operating, and troubleshooting CNC milling and turning equipment to manufacture, modify, and prove out tooling, fixtures, prototypes, and other engineering-related components, including tool selection, work offset establishment, program loading, setup verification, and first-article validation.
- Build, assemble, fit, modify, and prove out tooling, fixtures, and workholding systems to engineering specifications using SolidWorks drawings, Mastercam programs, and other technical documentation provided by the Manufacturing Engineer, and recommend practical improvements based on machining, fit, function, and production performance.
- Maintain, repair, and modify tooling, fixtures, and workholding systems, including diagnosing wear, damage, or recurring performance issues and implementing corrective actions within established engineering requirements.
- Support new product and process launches by manufacturing and implementing tooling and workholding, completing assigned process setup and trial activities, and validating first-article parts against engineering requirements.
- Troubleshoot machining, tooling, fixture, workholding, and assembly issues; implement corrective actions within established requirements, and work with the Manufacturing Engineer on issues requiring further engineering analysis or design changes.
- Perform precision inspection and validation of parts, tooling, and fixtures using appropriate measuring and inspection equipment to verify conformance to engineering drawings, tolerances, and GD&T requirements.
- Support the installation, modification, setup, testing, and prove-out of manufacturing equipment, tooling, fixtures, and process improvements, coordinating with Manufacturing Engineering, Maintenance, Quality, and Production as required.
- Participate in continuous improvement activities, identifying and implementing opportunities to improve tooling reliability, setup efficiency, manufacturability, quality, safety, and production performance.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
- High school diploma or GED required; completion of a recognized machinist, tool and die, CNC machining, or related technical apprenticeship or certification preferred.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on CNC milling and turning, toolroom, fixture-building, prototype, or related manufacturing experience, including experience supporting Manufacturing Engineering activities.
- Demonstrated fixture builder/toolmaker skills, including the ability to build, fit, modify, troubleshoot, repair, and prove out precision tooling, fixtures, and workholding.
- Proficient in CNC machine setup, operation, and troubleshooting, including tool selection, work offsets, machining parameters, setup verification, and program prove-out for one-off, prototype, tooling, and engineering applications.
- Ability to read and interpret G-code and M-code and make appropriate at-the-machine program edits and adjustments, including feeds and speeds, tooling, positioning, and other changes required to troubleshoot and optimize machining operations.
- Proficient in manual machining and common toolroom equipment, including manual mills, lathes, surface grinders, drill presses, saws, and related equipment used to manufacture, fit, modify, and repair tooling and fixtures.
- Working knowledge of SolidWorks, including the ability to navigate and interpret models, assemblies, and drawings and make routine modifications to existing tooling, fixture, and component designs within established engineering requirements.
- Working knowledge of Mastercam, including the ability to review toolpaths, tooling information, and machining parameters, troubleshoot programs at the machine, and make routine program modifications.
- Advanced blueprint-reading skills, including the interpretation and practical application of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
- Skilled in precision measurement and inspection using micrometers, calipers, height gauges, indicators, and other applicable measuring and inspection equipment.
- Strong mechanical aptitude, troubleshooting ability, and hands-on problem-solving skills, with the ability to work effectively and communicate findings and recommendations to Manufacturing Engineers, machinists, operators, Quality, Maintenance, and other production personnel.
