Job Summary:
FD Thomas is seeking a motivated Estimator to join our growing industrial painting division. This role is ideal for someone with early to mid-level estimating experience who is eager to build their career while working alongside experienced professionals.
You will support the estimating team in preparing accurate bids, analyzing project requirements, and coordinating with vendors and internal teams. Depending on your experience level, you'll have the opportunity to take on increasing responsibility and ownership of estimates.
- Assist with preparing project estimates, proposals, and bid packages
- Review and interpret project plans, specifications, and scope requirements
- Perform quantity take-offs and assist with developing unit pricing
- Support the development of conceptual budgets and cost estimates
- Communicate with general contractors, vendors, and subcontractors to gather pricing
- Track and organize bid documentation and correspondence
- Help identify scope gaps, inconsistencies, or potential risks in project documents
- Participate in bid-day activities, including reviewing incoming quotes
- Support Request for Information (RFI) processes when needed
- Assist project teams with buyouts, purchasing, and change orders
- Attend estimating meetings, job walks, and pre-bid meetings as assigned
- Contribute to continuous improvement and learning within the estimating team

In addition to your passion and purpose, to be successful in this Estimator role, you will possess the following:
Requirements and Education:
- 2 years of experience in construction estimating or a related field
- Basic understanding of construction documents and estimating principles
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
Preferred Requirements and Education:
- Experience with commercial or industrial construction projects
- Familiarity with coatings, painting, or specialty contracting industries
- Experience with estimating software (e.g., Viewpoint, Constructware, or similar)
- Degree or coursework in construction management, engineering, or related field
