Position Summary:
The Sealcoat Laborer is responsible for assisting with the application of sealcoat to asphalt surfaces, ensuring that they are properly cleaned, prepped, and sealed to extend the lifespan of the pavement. This position requires physical labor, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to safety practices on the job site.
Key Responsibilities:
- Sealcoat Application: Assist in the application of sealcoat to asphalt surfaces using various tools such as brushes, squeegees, or spray machines, ensuring an even and smooth application.
- Surface Preparation: Clean and prepare asphalt surfaces by sweeping, blowing, or power washing to remove dirt, debris, and other contaminants before applying sealcoat.
- Mixing Sealcoat Materials: Assist in mixing sealcoat materials to the proper consistency, ensuring the correct application process.
- Ensure Quality Work: Ensure that the sealcoating process meets company and industry standards for surface appearance, thickness, and durability.
- Assist in Equipment Operation: Help operators set up and maintain equipment, including sealcoat sprayers and other machinery, and assist in moving or positioning equipment around the worksite.
- Safety Compliance: Follow all safety procedures, including wearing the required personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensuring safe practices are followed by all crew members.
- Monitor Weather Conditions: Understand weather conditions (temperature, humidity, etc.) to ensure that sealcoating is applied under optimal conditions for proper adhesion and curing.
- Traffic Control: Set up cones, barricades, and signs to ensure a safe work environment and protect workers from traffic or other hazards.
- Cleanup and Maintenance: Clean up after each job, including washing tools and removing equipment from the site. Perform basic maintenance on tools and equipment when necessary.
- Report Issues: Notify the supervisor of any problems or concerns during the application process, such as surface imperfections or issues with equipment.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting heavy materials and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to work all days of the week, weather dependent.
- Basic knowledge of sealcoating processes, materials, and tools is a plus, but not required (on-the-job training is typically provided).
- Strong attention to detail, ensuring high-quality and consistent work.
- Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
- Ability to follow directions and work independently when needed.
- Ability to work safely and adhere to safety guidelines on the job site.
Preferred Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience in construction, asphalt, or sealcoating work is a plus.
- Valid driver’s license.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds or more when needed.
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work in various positions for extended periods.
- Ability to work in outdoor conditions, including exposure to heat, cold, dust, and moisture.
Work Environment:
- Outdoor work environment, often in hot, humid, or inclement weather conditions.
- Seasonal Full-time position (May – October) with possible overtime based on project deadlines.
