What are the responsibilities and job description for the Part Time Custodian / Maintenance position at Aspen Public Schools, Inc?
Under the supervision of the Facilities Services Manager and Chief Operating Officer, the Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, sanitation, safety, and general upkeep of school buildings and grounds. This includes performing routine custodial duties and minor maintenance and repair tasks to ensure facilities are clean, safe, and in good working order. Custodians also support school events by setting up and breaking down furniture and equipment. Each Custodian is assigned to a specific campus but may be reassigned as operational needs change. While the position follows a set schedule, flexibility is occasionally required to support school functions or cover for absent team members.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Clean and sanitize classrooms, restrooms, offices, hallways, cafeterias, gyms, and other school facilities
- Sweep, mop, scrub, wax, and polish floors
- Vacuum carpets and clean rugs, mats, and upholstered furniture
- Clean and disinfect restrooms, sinks, fixtures, and drinking fountains
- Empty trash and recycling bins; clean and sanitize containers as needed
- Wash windows, walls, doors, and other surfaces
- Perform minor, non-technical maintenance and repairs, such as:
- Replacing light bulbs and ceiling tiles
- Tightening loose hardware or fixtures
- Adjusting or assembling furniture and equipment
- Clearing simple drain clogs or reporting plumbing issues
- Report facility maintenance needs beyond minor repairs to the Facilities Services Manager
- Restock restroom and custodial supplies as needed
- Lock and unlock buildings and secure the campus in accordance with protocols
- Assist with event setup and breakdown, including moving and arranging tables, chairs, and AV equipment
- Maintain and care for custodial tools and equipment; ensure safe and organized storage of cleaning and maintenance supplies
- Follow all district safety procedures and OSHA regulations
- Provide support at other campuses or substitute for absent custodians when required
- Perform other related custodial or minor maintenance duties as assigned
SCHEDULE & FLEXIBILITY
- Assigned a regular schedule by the Facilities Services Manager
- May be required to adjust hours to support school functions, special events, or coverage needs
- Must be flexible and willing to work at a different campus if operational needs arise
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
Experience
- Previous custodial or janitorial experience preferred
- Experience with basic maintenance tasks is a plus
License
- Valid California Driver’s License preferred but not required
Knowledge of:
- Custodial procedures, cleaning agents, and safety practices
- Safe operation of custodial and basic maintenance tools and equipment
- Routine, non-technical maintenance techniques
Ability to:
- Follow written and verbal instructions
- Perform basic maintenance and repair tasks as assigned
- Work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
- Provide courteous and professional service to students, staff, and the public
- Safely lift, carry, and move furniture, supplies, and equipment
- Adapt to changes in work schedule, location, or task assignments
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Frequent walking, standing, bending, lifting, reaching, and carrying
- Regular use of hands and arms to operate cleaning and maintenance tools
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds
- Ability to push, pull, or move heavy furniture, equipment, and carts
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Work performed both indoors and outdoors across multiple school campuses
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, noise, and varying weather conditions
- May occasionally work evenings, weekends, or non-school days to support events or projects
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $18.50 - $20.00 per hour
