GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Activity Coordinator is an important part of meeting the spiritual, emotional, physical, psychological, and social needs of our residents. The Activity Coordinator is responsible for planning, supervising, and implementing purposeful and meaningful activities for the residents. One-to-one and group activities should include a variety of mediums such as art, music, exercises, discussion groups, and special outings. The Activity Coordinator will also help residents with activities of daily living, and enhance their lives by being a positive part of their environment. This will be accomplished by meeting the needs of the residents in a cheerful, timely manner, and by communicating and coordinating with others to attain the goals set by the Facility as a whole.
Activities director may also contribute to administrative tasks to support Executive Director as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High-School diploma or GED.
- Comprehensive knowledge of practices related to task breakdown, activities of daily living, and general programming for various cognitive levels.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the physical, emotional, social, and biological changes which occur in the geriatric population.
- Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills.
- Creative, flexible, enthusiastic.
- Ability to train staff to lead individual and group activities.
- Capable of working within the budget allowed, and maintaining records of all spending to be submitted to the Main Office.
- Must be available Monday through Friday, 9am – 3pm, and Saturdays from 1pm – 5pm.
- Demonstrates sensitivity, empathy, and a sincere interest in working with the Alzheimer’s population.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Plan, schedule and implement a creative program of individual and group activities based on individual residents’ needs, interests, and abilities; programming operates on a schedule of 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Document daily resident participation and log activities conducted.
- Plan and decorate community for holiday and events supporting and working with Marketing Director to ensure supports sales.
- Notify other staff members regarding resident interest, needs, and problems.
- Maintain and organize an adequate supply of materials to support the activity program 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Provide in-services to staff on methods of effective activity leading for one-to-one, small, and large groups.
- Plan and post a large monthly calendar to inform residents, staff, families, and volunteers of scheduled activities.
- Use time effectively and efficiently (e.g., work with one group of residents while another activity is in progress involving other residents.
- Set up prior to activities and clean up after the activity is completed. Keep storeroom neat and organized, and keep all supplies clearly labelled and inventoried.
- Determine how to group residents into different levels according to varying criteria (e.g., cognitive functioning level, physical capabilities, language skills), to ensure maximum participation and enjoyment.
- Participate in problem-solving session regarding the residents.
- Display the empathy and patience necessary to work with the cognitively-impaired elderly.
- Be able to cope with mental and emotional stress related to work with persons who are ill, disabled, emotionally upset, or confused.
- Practice behavior management techniques such as validation, reminiscence, and distraction.
- Observe and promptly report changes in health status and behavior of residents to the Executive Director.
- Maintain resident rights and confidentiality.
- Interact positively with residents, family members, personnel, ancillary providers, consultants and visitors under a variety of conditions and circumstances.
- Follow universal precautions and infection control techniques.
- Participate in all staff meetings, in-services, and fire/disaster drills.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director or Supervisor.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work in office areas as well as throughout the facility. Required to follow dress code, and move throughout the facility with frequency.
- Subject to frequent interruptions.
- Frequent interactions with residents, family members, and visitors who are distressed or hostile, and in need emotional support. Appropriate understanding and empathy is both required and expected in each and every encounter with residents and their loved ones.
- Work beyond normal working hours such as weekends, holidays, and other shifts when necessary. Subject to callback during emergency conditions (e.g., severe weather, evacuation, post-disaster, etc.)
- Subject to injury from falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc., throughout the workday, as well as reactions from dust, disinfectants, and other air contaminants.
- Subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including TB and the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.
- May be subject to the handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals.
