Automation Design Engineer

Summary

The Automation Design Engineer supports the design and implementation of custom industrial manufacturing machines and automated systems within Ashley Furniture’s production environment. This role contributes to project leadership execution up to $500K, focusing on component selection, BOM creation, and basic mechanical design to enhance efficiency and reliability.

Essential Functions

• Design custom industrial manufacturing machinery components with attention to manufacturability, cost, and performance
• Create and manage Bills of Materials (BOM) accurately to support procurement and production needs
• Perform basic finite element analysis (FEA) to validate component sizing and structural integrity
• Apply principles of pneumatics and hydraulics in machine design and system integration
• Support sensor and motor placement decisions to optimize machine functionality. Sizing for pneumatics and electrical actuators for application and cost
• Assist with robotics integration and controls, gaining exposure to robotic systems and basic PLC interface concepts
• Develop 3D models / complex assemblies and 2D drawings primarily using SolidWorks and AutoCAD software
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure design consistency and project alignment
• Lead design reviews of their work and participate in reviews of others
• Participate in supplier and vendor coordination for component sourcing
• Follow company and industry safety standards and guidelines, maintaining awareness of ISO 12100 and ANSI B11 compliance requirements
• Contribute to troubleshooting and continuous improvement efforts on automated equipment
