Job Title: Assistant Coach, Speech and Debate; Temporary

Work Site: Ashland High School

Reports to: Principal/Athletic Director

Salary: $5,699 - $6,735

Job Summary

The Assistant Speech & Debate Coach supports the head coach in the planning, supervision, and operation of the Speech & Debate program. The assistant coach works closely with students, coaching staff, school administration, and families to develop communication, research, critical-thinking, and performance skills while maintaining a safe, inclusive, and positive team environment in alignment with ASD standards and school expectations.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Assists the head coach in organizing and supervising practices as the program requires.
  • Teaches and reinforces skills necessary to participate and to be competitive in Speech and Debate.
  • Teaches and reinforces the strategies necessary to participate and to be competitive in Speech and Debate.
  • Assists the head coach with seasonal goals, practice plans, tournament preparation, and program objectives.
  • Maintains appropriate communication with students, coaching staff, school staff, parents/guardians, tournament officials, judges, and the community.
  • Assists with maintaining records and information related to student eligibility, attendance, tournament entries, program materials, travel, and emergency medical information.
  • Ensures appropriate adult supervision of students before, during, and after practices, tournaments, team activities, and transportation.
  • Provides for the safety and security of all students and promptly reports safety concerns or incidents.
  • Follows all specified standards, policies, and procedures of the building and Ashland School District.
  • Actively encourages student participation.
  • Models and promotes ethical behavior, respectful discourse, integrity, good sportsmanship, and positive character development.
  • Maintains a positive working relationship with the head coach, administration, staff, families, and community.
  • Assists with the proper care, organization, inventory, and security of program materials, technology, supplies, and competition resources throughout the season.
  • Promotes concepts of sportsmanship.
  • Develops and maintains positive health, safety, and supervision standards for all students in the program.
  • Attend work regularly and is punctual.
  • Annually pass the District's required online training by the District's assigned due-date.
  • While working collaboratively with others, implements decisions within ASD established policies and procedures.
  • Professionally represent the school and the District in interactions with parents, community, staff, and students and resolves conflict in a professional manner.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of and/or experience in speech, debate, public speaking, performance, or a related field.
  • Experience working with high school students in coaching, instructional, leadership, Speech & Debate, or extracurricular settings preferred.
  • Ability to teach, mentor, motivate, and guide students while supporting their communication skills, confidence, development, and well-being.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to supervise students during practices, tournaments, travel, and activities outside of the regular school day.

The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate but may occasionally be high during tournaments, travel, or group activities. Work may take place in classrooms, auditoriums, school facilities, and off-site competition venues.
