Job Summary

The Traveling Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing clinical oversight, training, and delegation to unlicensed caregivers authorized to perform medication administration (“med passers”) in assisted living settings. This role supports multiple communities by ensuring caregivers are properly trained, competent, and compliant with Wisconsin administrative codes and best practices. The RN serves as a clinical resource, promotes safe medication practices, and helps maintain regulatory compliance across all assigned locations. The Traveling RN must be adaptable, clinically competent, and able to integrate quickly into different care environments.

Key Responsibilities

Training & Education

  • Develop and conduct medication administration training programs for caregivers in accordance with Wisconsin regulations
  • Provide initial and ongoing competency-based training for med passers
  • Educate staff on medication safety, infection control, documentation, and resident rights
  • Train staff on proper use of medication administration systems (eMAR/MAR)

Delegation & Clinical Oversight

  • Assess caregiver competency and delegate medication administration tasks per Wisconsin Nurse Practice Act
  • Perform initial and periodic evaluations of delegated staff to ensure continued competency
  • Provide supervision and direction to caregivers performing delegated nursing tasks
  • Maintain documentation of training, delegation, and competency validation

Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Audit medication administration practices and documentation for accuracy and compliance
  • Ensure adherence to state regulations for RCACs/CBRFs and company policies
  • Identify gaps in practice and implement corrective action plans
  • Participate in surveys, inspections, and plan of correction processes as needed

Clinical Support

  • Assist with resident assessments related to medication management
  • Collaborate with physicians, pharmacists, and interdisciplinary teams
  • Provide guidance on medication-related concerns, errors, or adverse events
  • Support communities during staffing shortages or clinical transitions

Travel & Flexibility

  • Travel to multiple communities across Wisconsin based on organizational needs
  • Adapt quickly to different teams, workflows, and resident populations

Qualifications

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in Wisconsin
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program (ADN or BSN)
  • Preferred 2 years of nursing experience (assisted living, long-term care, or community-based settings preferred)
  • Preferred knowledge of Wisconsin assisted living regulations (RCAC/CBRF)
  • Experience with staff education, training, or clinical supervision
  • Strong understanding of safe medication administration practices
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience delegating nursing tasks to unlicensed staff
  • Experience conducting medication aide / med passer training
  • Familiarity with eMAR systems and multiple documentation platforms
  • Experience with state surveys and regulatory compliance

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Travel required throughout Wisconsin
  • Ability to stand, walk, and occasionally assist residents as needed
  • Work schedule is primarily 1st Shift, but on call for calls regarding medication questions, errors, or other concerns/ issues
