The Company
Asheville Mica Company, established in 1899, manufactures and imports mica materials and components for a wide range of industries. We serve a global customer base, including Fortune 500 companies, with a primary concentration in North America.
We are currently expanding to support rapid growth and increased domestic production of thermal and dielectric components for the EV, hybrid, battery energy storage (BESS), defense, and aerospace markets. Our recent expansion includes a new production facility to support these initiatives.
Position Description
Asheville Mica Company is seeking a Quality Control Manager to provide leadership in quality across procurement, manufacturing, and delivery operations at our City Center location in Newport News, VA.
This is a highly visible, hands-on role responsible for ensuring that raw materials, in-process production, and finished goods meet customer specifications, drawings, and quality standards. The position partners closely with engineering, supply chain, and plant leadership to drive continuous improvement and operational excellence.
This role is well-suited for a quality professional who is comfortable working directly on the manufacturing floor, can think creatively, and is not afraid to personally confront and resolve quality issues in a collaborative environment. Interface with customer on corrective actions and quality concerns when required.
This position is exempt and based onsite in Newport News, VA.
Position Responsibilities
The Quality Control Manager is responsible for the overall direction and execution of quality control operations at the City Center facility, including:
- Direct and oversee inspection and testing of incoming materials, in-process production, and finished goods to ensure compliance with customer specifications and quality standards
- Evaluate, develop, and maintain effective Quality Control processes for current and new production lines
- Establish, enforce, and continuously improve production quality standards and inspection methods
- Recommend and implement appropriate inspection tools, gauges, test equipment, and laboratory capabilities
- Oversee testing processes to validate material and product attributes relative to UL, NEMA, customer, and other applicable standards
- Serve as an internal champion for quality excellence and production standards; provide training on best practices as needed
- Coordinate with engineering, supply chain, and plant management to support quality, efficiency, and on-time delivery
- Evaluate materials, processes, and outcomes to minimize defects, scrap, rework, and downtime
- Oversee development of test labs and participate in production line and process design
- Interface with customer and vendors on corrective actions and quality concerns when required.
- Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for non-conformances using structured problem-solving methodologies
- Support ISO 9001 compliance and certification efforts as a contributing member of the ISO team, including documentation and process adherence
- Ensure quality-related processes and records are properly documented and maintained in accordance with ISO 9001 requirements
- Recommend and support systems (hardware/software) to track QC data and provide visibility into performance, trends, and issues
- Contribute to production KPIs and continuous improvement goals
- Attend industry events, trade shows, and professional affiliations as required
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Preferred Experience
- Experience with PPAP methodology
- Automotive or other regulated manufacturing experience
- Hands-on experience with:
- Control Plans
- PFMEA
- Gauge R&R
- Process capability
- 5-Why and 8D problem-solving methodologies
- Exposure to shop-floor safety practices and safety coordination
Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a quality management or quality control leadership role
- Strong leadership skills in a collaborative, team-oriented manufacturing environment
- Demonstrated ability to drive structured problem-solving and continuous improvement
- Self-starter capable of working independently and managing competing priorities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong time management skills with attention to detail
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; AutoCAD experience a plus
