General Description

The Family and Consumer Science (FACS) and Career Development Coordinator (CDC) Teacher develops lesson plans, teaches Family Consumer Science courses to middle school students, and serves as the lead for the College and Career Exploration program. CCE lead responsibilities include planning and coordinating career exploration experiences, arranging guest speakers and industry connections, serving as the curriculum contact, and collaborating closely with the CTE Director to support program implementation and alignment. Additionally, the classroom teacher is expected to respond to a wide range of inquiries from students' parents or guardians regarding the instructional program and student progress. The FACS/CDC teacher is also expected to sponsor a CTSO (Family, Career, Community Leaders of America - FCCLA). FCCLA provides students with the opportunity to develop leadership skills, occupational proficiency, and self-awareness.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Must hold or be eligible for a North Carolina teaching license with an endorsement in Family and Consumer Science (FACS 710 or 716) and meet requirements for Career Development Coordinator (CDC 747) or Career Development Facilitator (CDF 749).

Completed a state-approved teacher preparation program in Family and Consumer Science (completed a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution along with passing the Praxis exam in Family and Consumer Science 5122 exam).

To convert to a Continuing CDC license (747/749), completion of NCDA Facilitating Career Development (FCD) Course and NCDPI New CDC Induction is required (or Option 2: 6 semester hours in counseling theory and career development Induction). Prior teaching experience (preferred).

Specific Duties And Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver engaging and standards-based FACS instruction aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and Career Clusters Framework.
  • Provide instruction in FACS pathways and middle grades foundational modules, including Foods and Nutrition, Social and Emotional Wellness, and Interior Design concepts.
  • Integrate real-world applications, early career exploration, project-based learning, and 21st-century skills.
  • Deliver Career Development Coordinator (CDC) functions, including administering career interest inventories, introducing career clusters, organizing guest speakers, and facilitating early work-based learning/career awareness experiences.
  • Prepare middle school students for Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) participation (e.g., FCCLA) and encourage leadership and competition opportunities.
  • Manage and maintain a safe, inclusive, and organized classroom and lab environment that supports hands-on learning.
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies, assessment tools, and technologies to meet diverse learning needs and monitor student progress.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, families, community partners, high school CTE staff, and CTE advisory boards to enhance student learning and career readiness.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student achievement, attendance, and other required documentation.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development (including NCDPI CDC induction/training), CTE department meetings, and school improvement initiatives.
  • Follow all federal, state, and district policies, including those related to CTE reporting and compliance.
  • Supervise students in both classroom and laboratory settings, ensuring safety and proper use of equipment and supplies.
  • Accounts for and maintains inventory for classroom, school, and district property as required.
  • Advises CTE Director and school administration of needed repairs, replacements, and/or unsafe conditions as soon as they occur.
  • Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss student educational needs and progress.
  • Compiles information from various CTE pathways sources and disseminates information via meetings, conferences, professional development, presentations, etc. to recruit employers, stakeholders, mentors, teachers, etc.
  • Participates in required meetings with local business partners.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the CTE Director and carries out non-instructional duties as assigned and/or need is perceived.
  • Follows a plan for professional development and demonstrates evidence of growth.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to sit, stand, walk, and drive a car. Must be able to lift boxes to 10 pounds. Physical demand requirements are for Light Work.

Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments, or directions to subordinates or assistants.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read simple forms. Requires the ability to prepare time sheets and supply requisitions using prescribed format.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form; to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in Standard English.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas, to add, subtract, divide, and multiply.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape.

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using computers and other technology.

Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as maintenance equipment. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors or shades of color.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under average levels of stress.
