Location: Asheville City Schools Elementary Schools

Reports To: Principal and/or Designee

FLSA Status: Exempt

Employment Status: Part-Time (Hours Determined by Funding and School Needs)

Salary: Based on Asheville City Schools Salary Schedule and Approved Funding Source

Position Summary

The Part-Time Math Interventionist provides targeted mathematics instruction and intervention services to elementary students who require additional academic support to achieve grade-level proficiency. The Interventionist works collaboratively with classroom teachers, instructional coaches, administrators, and support staff to identify students' needs, implement evidence-based interventions, monitor progress, and support student achievement in alignment with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and Asheville City Schools' strategic goals.

This position plays a critical role within the school's Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework by providing supplemental instruction designed to accelerate learning, close achievement gaps, and increase student confidence and success in mathematics.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Student Intervention and Instruction

  • Provide direct mathematics intervention services to individual students and small groups identified through school-based data and MTSS processes.
  • Deliver research-based intervention strategies designed to strengthen foundational and grade-level mathematical skills.
  • Support student development in number sense, mathematical reasoning, problem-solving, computational fluency, and conceptual understanding.
  • Differentiate instruction based on student needs, learning styles, and assessment data.
  • Create engaging learning experiences that promote student growth and confidence in mathematics.
  • Assist students in developing mathematical thinking and perseverance when solving complex problems.

Data Collection and Progress Monitoring

  • Utilize assessment data, benchmark results, classroom performance data, and teacher recommendations to identify students requiring intervention support.
  • Monitor student progress regularly and maintain accurate records of intervention services and outcomes.
  • Analyze student performance data to determine the effectiveness of interventions and adjust instructional strategies as needed.
  • Assist in the implementation of progress-monitoring tools and assessments.
  • Maintain documentation required for MTSS and other district reporting processes.

Collaboration and Support

  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to align intervention instruction with core classroom mathematics instruction.
  • Participate in MTSS, Student Support Team (SST), grade-level, and data review meetings as requested.
  • Share student progress information with teachers, administrators, and other support personnel.
  • Assist teachers in implementing effective instructional strategies and interventions within the classroom setting.
  • Collaborate with Exceptional Children (EC), English Learner (EL), and other support staff to meet the diverse needs of students.

Family Communication

  • Communicate student progress and intervention goals with parents and guardians as appropriate.
  • Provide resources and strategies to help families support mathematics learning at home.
  • Participate in parent conferences and school meetings as requested.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student records and information.
  • Participate in professional development related to mathematics instruction, intervention practices, and MTSS implementation.
  • Follow Asheville City Schools policies, procedures, and professional standards.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and a commitment to student success.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or designee.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid North Carolina teaching license in Elementary Education, Mathematics Education, or a related field.
  • Experience teaching elementary mathematics preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to use student data to inform instruction.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three (3) or more years of successful elementary teaching experience.
  • Experience providing mathematics intervention services.
  • Training in evidence-based mathematics intervention programs and strategies.
  • Experience working within an MTSS framework.
  • Knowledge of North Carolina elementary mathematics standards and assessments.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, and move throughout the school environment.
  • Ability to lift and carry instructional materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to supervise and actively engage with students in various learning settings.
  • Ability to use computers, instructional technology, and standard office equipment.
