JOB SUMMARY:
The Inpatient/Outpatient Coder is responsible for accurately coding diseases, operations, and procedures for inpatient and outpatient services in accordance with nationally recognized standards and guidelines. This role involves utilizing the 3M Encoder computer system with ICD-10 CM and CPT coding supplements, reviewing medical documentation, and ensuring precision in coding processes to optimize billing and data quality.
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- High School Graduate or equivalent.
- Associate’s degree (preferred).
- CCS Certification or CPC Certification (required).
Regulatory Requirements:
- CCS certification (Certified Coding Specialist) or AAPC Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification (required).
- Two or more years of hospital coding experience (preferred).
- Familiarity with ICD-10 CM coding principles for acute facility and outpatient services (preferred).
- Ability to collaborate with physicians (preferred).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Accurately code inpatient, emergency, outpatient, and clinic records within four days of service alignment with ICD-10 and CPT guidelines.
2. Thoroughly review charts to identify all relevant diagnoses and procedures.
3. Professionally contact physicians for clarification or additional information when needed.
4. Utilize computerized coding and abstracting tools with accuracy and efficiency.
5. Adhere to nationally recognized coding standards and regulations.
6. Ensure recurring charts are coded by the first of each month.
7. Minimize unbilled account errors and delays through thorough review and resolution.
8. Leverage resources such as CPT Assistant to ensure accuracy.
9. Maintain ethical coding practices and compliance with regulatory guidelines.
10. Make independent decisions effectively during daily duties.
11. Ensure data quality and optimize reimbursement under federal and state payment systems.
12. Serve as a coding and medical necessity resource for the hospital staff and physician offices.
13. Maintain working relationships with other departments and medical staff.
14. Stay updated on coding rule changes and industry updates.
15. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Must be willing to receive all required vaccinations (i.e., flu shot, etc.).
