What are the responsibilities and job description for the Truancy Interventionist position at Ascension Parish School Board?
- Education Certification – High School Diploma or it equivalent, preferably an Associate Degree.
- Other requirements- this position involves parish wide travel and requires the possession of a valid Louisiana Driver’s license, as well as a reliable mode of transportation. It further requires a general knowledge of computer use, excellent oral and written communication skills, and positive interpersonal skills.
- Serves as a liaison between the Child Welfare and Attendance Supervisor, parent and school officials in relation to truancy.
- Conducts home school visits with truant students and their families to gather information and assess obstacles to school attendance.
- Makes recommendations to truant students and their families for alleviating truancy.
- Provides information to students and their families regarding legal consequences of continued truancy.
- Documents correspondence regarding the status of truant students.
- Acts as an agent for the Child Welfare and Attendance Supervisor in hearings resulting from attendance problems.
- Assists the Child Welfare and Attendance supervisor with all case filings in juvenile court, the Department Of Children’s Services, and the District Attorney’s Office relevant to truancy.
- Issues warnings and assists in filing and documenting complaints against students, parents or guardians in accordance with compulsory attendance laws.
- Monitors attendance and keeps records of students with re-occurring attendance problems as reported by each school.
- Assists school officials in investigating and verifying student residency information.
- Provides ongoing updates on all active truancy cases to the Child Welfare and Attendance Supervisor and other applicable school site personnel.
- Maintains professional awareness of regulations regarding the LEA’S attendance policies and procedures.
- Documents requests for attendance waivers and presents documentation to Child Welfare and Attendance Supervisor.
- Follows the directives of the Child Welfare and Attendance Supervisor.
- Consults with the Child Welfare and Attendance Supervisor for interpretation or application of particular.
- Consults with and works collaboratively with FINS and local law enforcement officials in regards to truancy issues.
- Assists school officials in assembling documents for court appearances involving habitual truants.
- Communicates with and works cooperatively with administrators, counselors and other designated school personnel in reference to truancy issues.
- Documents records of all truancy cases investigated and reports applicable information to school officials in a timely manner.
- Demonstrates knowledge of Louisiana’s compulsory attendance laws.
- Prepares narrative and statistical reports documenting incidents of truancy.
- Provides courteous and prompt service to all internal and external customers including students, parents, co-workers, etc. Schedules and/or attends conferences with parents. Prioritizes and addresses requests and assignments in a professional manner to develop cooperative relationships and to ensure that student and employee records confidentiality is assured.
- Identifies opportunities and recommends methods to improve service, work processes and financial performance. e.g. expense management. Assists in the implementation of quality improvement initiatives.
- Assists co-workers in the completion of tasks and assignments to ensure continuity of service. Orients new co-workers and actively supports teamwork throughout the school system.
