Qualifications:

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: (OPM Operating Manual, Qualification Standards ).

GS-11 :One year experience at the GS-09 grade level or equivalent planning, organizing and directing the work of subordinate personnel in a corrections/detention facility by providing guidance to staff on the custodial care of inmates, security activities, and the interpretation of departmental policy; submitting to senior officials written and oral reports on such areas as inmate records, booking and release of inmates, staff training and similar documents relative to the efficient operations of a detention/corrections facility; and evaluating a detention/corrections program operations effectiveness as it relates to staff and emergency and administrative management. OR

Education: 3 full academic years of progressively higher-level graduate education or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or a L.L.M. in correctional administration, criminology, psychology, social work, sociology, or other fields related to the position OR

Combination of specialized experience and education that totals 100% of the experience requirement.

MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: The duties of this position require moderate to arduous physical exertion involving walking and standing, and exposure to inclement weather. Manual dexterity with comparatively free motion of finger, wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip, and knee joints is required. Arms, hands, legs, and feet must be sufficiently intact and functioning in order that applicants may perform the duties satisfactorily. Sufficiently good vision in each eye, with or without correction, is required to perform duties satisfactorily. Near vision, corrective lenses permitted, must be sufficient to read printed material the size of typewritten characters. Hearing loss, as measured by an audiometer, must not exceed 35 decibels at 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hz levels. Since the duties of these positions are exacting and responsible, and involve activities under trying conditions, applicants must possess emotional and mental stability. Any physical condition that would cause the applicant to be a hazard to himself/herself, or others is disqualifying.

NOTE: To be eligible for Secondary Law Enforcement Coverage, you must 1) move directly from a federal Primary/Rigorous position; 2) complete 3 years of service in a primary/rigorous position, and; 3) must be continuously employed in a secondary position(s) since moving from a primary/rigorous position.

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.

Merit Promotion candidates must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the announcement closing date.

Responsibilities:

As Supervisory Correctional Specialist, GS-0006, your typical work assignments may include, but not limited to:
  • Provide technical guidance assistance and supervision to correctional staff in planning, developing and coordinating a detention/correctional program. Maintains liaison with Federal, Tribal, state and local officials.
  • Assess detention facility operations and inspects on-going activities; makes evaluations and periodically adjusts work assignments.
  • Perform detention/correctional program review and remediation, accurate and safe staffing analysis for detention/correctional programs. Coordinates reviews, approves and documents training specific to the detention/correctional programs mission.
  • Supervise and monitor criminal offenders in detention/correctional institutions or community based detention/correctional treatment or rehabilitation facilities. This involves a wide array of complex tasks related to all aspects of facility security and inmate custody.
  • Provide, coordinate and supervise services, activities, and programs established by local policy, Title 25 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 69 BIA manual and Department of the Interior; Departmental manual 446.
  • Implement health, safety and security measures for staff and inmates by overseeing the supervision of inmate movement, searches, transportation, classification, daily/weekly/monthly/quarterly/annual inmate counts, as well as maintaining fire safety, key control, perimeter security, inmate compliance with rules and regulations, and implementing health standards and health inspections of staff and inmates.
