Position Overview
The Division Controller is responsible for overseeing accounting operations and ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of the company’s financial reporting. This role plays a critical part in maintaining strong internal controls, supporting operational decision-making, and driving financial discipline across the organization.
In a fast-paced transportation environment, the Division Controller will take a hands-on approach while leading the accounting team and partnering closely with operations to improve profitability and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting Operations & Team Leadership
- Lead, supervise, and develop the accounts payable and GL team, establishing clear expectations and accountability
- Implement and maintain best practices across all accounting functions
- Foster a culture of accuracy, urgency, and continuous improvement
- Ensure strong cross-functional relationships with other departments
Financial Reporting & Close Process
- Oversee the preparation of accurate, timely monthly and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP
- Prepare journal entries and balance sheet schedules
- Prepare inter-company cost allocation entries
- Manage the month-end and year-end close process for our two brokerage companies, ensuring proper cut-offs, reconciliations, and accruals
- Assist with the month-end close for additional companies
- Maintain the chart of accounts and ensure consistent financial reporting structure across entities
- Perform detailed financial analysis and create related reports, identify trends and variances, and communicate key insights to leadership
Accounts Payable & Transaction Oversight
- Ensure timely and accurate processing of accounts payable, including capturing available discounts
- Oversee vendor payments, credit card transactions, contractor payments, and prepaid balances
- Monitor transaction accuracy and enforce strong financial controls
Cost Control & Operational Support
- Partner with operations to monitor and control costs across the business
- Analyze expenses for trends, inefficiencies, and cost-saving opportunities
- Support operational initiatives through financial analysis and reporting
- Drive accountability around spending and financial performance
Cost Accounting & Profitability
- Develop and maintain accurate cost tracking, including revenue, cost, and profit per mile
- Analyze key operational metrics and margins across business segments
- Identify cost drivers and recommend improvements to enhance profitability
Internal Controls & Compliance
- Develop, implement, and monitor internal control systems to safeguard company assets
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, regulatory requirements, and company policies
- Oversee audit processes and maintain relationships with external auditors and CPA firm
- Maintain proper documentation of contracts, leases, and financial records
Strategic & Business Support
- Provide financial insights and recommendations to support business decisions
- Assist leadership with financial analysis, and operational reviews
- Develop and monitor KPIs aligned with company performance goals
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA or CMA desirable)
- 7 years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibility
- Experience in transportation, logistics, manufacturing, distribution or a similar operational industry preferred
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting
- Experience with ERP systems (SAP Business One experience a plus)
- Advanced Excel and financial analysis skills
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
