Arts4Schools is seeking a creative and engaging Fashion Design Instructor/Teaching Artist for an elementary after-school program in Washington, D.C. 20019.
The school serves K-5 students, with this program expected to focus primarily on grades 3-5.
Schedule: Approximately 3:45 PM to 4:45 PM, with the possibility of an additional instructional hour.
Pay: $32-$42 per hour, based on experience.
We are looking for someone who enjoys working with children and can make fashion design exciting, hands-on, and age appropriate.
What Students May LearnThe instructor should introduce students to the basics of fashion design through creative projects such as:
- Fashion sketching, color, patterns, fabrics, and basic design terminology
- Designing and decorating T-shirts, accessories, simple wearable pieces, tie-dye projects, and other age-appropriate creations
- Recycled and upcycled fashion using everyday materials
- Simple no-sew construction techniques, fabric tying, cutting, decorating, embellishing, and other creative methods
- Developing a design idea from a sketch or concept into a finished piece
- Basic fashion presentation, styling, confidence, posture, and modeling
Please note: Sewing machines are not currently available for this program. The instructor must be comfortable creating exciting fashion projects using no-sew and beginner-friendly techniques.
Quarterly ShowcaseStudents will work toward an end-of-quarter fashion experience, which may include a fashion show, runway presentation, exhibit, or showcase of their completed designs.
As students progress, we want them to learn how to design it, create it, wear it, and present it.
QualificationsApplicants should have:
- Experience in fashion design, apparel, costume design, styling, textile arts, sewing, or a related creative field
- Experience working with elementary-aged children or youth
- Ability to create structured, fun, hands-on projects appropriate for grades 3-5
- Strong classroom management and communication skills
- Creativity, patience, dependability, and professionalism
- Ability to prepare students for a final fashion presentation or showcase
Applicants must be able to:
- Successfully complete all required background checks
- Meet DCPS fingerprinting and clearance requirements
- Be eligible to receive DCPS clearance
