Position Title: School Nurse - Arthur T. Cummings School (2026 - 2027 SY)
Role:
The health services provided by the school nurse are essential to the student's educational success. The school nurse addresses the physical, mental, emotional, and social health needs of students and supports their achievement in the learning process. This is achieved by providing health care through assessment, intervention, and follow-up for all children within the school setting. The school nurse not only provides for the safety and care of students and staff but also addresses the need for integrating health solutions into the education setting. The school nurse must be a liaison between school personnel, family, community, and health care providers.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide first aid to students and staff.
- Supervise the administration of all medications and interventions.
- Manage chronic health care needs of students such as asthma, type 1 diabetes.
- Attend and participate in Individualized Educational Plan and 504 plan development as needed.
- Review immunization status for compliance with MA DPH regulations.
- Advise staff of proper procedures to follow in the event of a medical emergency.
- Provide training to staff on health issues such as life-threatening allergies and Epipen use.
- Maintain a daily record of all health room visits.
- Responds to frequently encountered health issues, providing counseling and crisis intervention when required.
- Collaborates with the parent/guardian and student to develop and implement an individualized health care plan for students.
- Responds to child neglect or abuse issues (as required by Massachusetts statute).
- Performs state mandated screening programs and provides appropriate referrals.
- Prepares regular written reports for school officials and MDPH and other agencies.
- Stays up to date regarding communicable disease prevention and infection control based on current guidelines for universal precautions, prevention of blood borne pathogens exposure and hazardous medical waste disposal.
- Establishes a process to identify students at risk for physical and psychosocial problems, communicates health needs to other school personnel as appropriate and establishes a referral system using both internal and community resources.
- Participates as a team member; with parental consent when indicated, shares information with other team members about children with special health care problems which affect learning and growth.
- Assumes responsibilities for in-service programs for school personnel for universal precautions, first aid, emergency care procedures.
- Acts as a resource in health education to school personnel, students and families.
- Uses community resources for referral of students with unmet health needs, including the need for a primary care provider.
Position Type: Full-time
Salary: $47,000-$68,000
Job Requirements and Qualifications:
- Possess a valid Massachusetts registered nurse license.
- Experience in an educational setting is preferred.
- Be knowledgeable of the rules and regulations of the state of Massachusetts concerning health standards for students and school facilities.
- DESE School nurse certification or in progress of obtaining (eligible for licensure).
- Bachelor or Master’s Degree in Nursing.
- CPR/First Aid Certified.
- At least 3 year(s) of relevant experience preferred.
- Bachelor degree preferred.
- Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
Salary : $45,321 - $56,971
