ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Operate water treatment and pumping facilities in accordance with State and Federal regulations. Ensure that water quality in the systems meet the Safe Drinking Water Standard.

Operators will be assigned to a designated territory and will cross train to operate facilities in other territories.

NATURE OF WORK:

This is responsible work involving the operation of Artesian Water’s supply and distribution systems. An employee in this class is responsible for the Company’s water treatment plants, several booster stations and water towers. Actual job duties depend upon assignment and require strict adherence to prescribed safety standards. Duties involve working on one’s own and require a proven satisfactory record of working independently with minimum supervision. Work is on a rotating shift basis, including weekends so as to control plant operations and maintain grounds and equipment. General supervision is received from the Senior Pump Operator, Supervisor of Pump Supply, or Supervisor of Maryland Operations. Nature of operation requires an employee to be available on a shift, on-call and/or emergency basis. Employee could be contacted by Pager or Cell Phone and use of a Pager or Cell for contact is required. Work is on a rotating shift basis including weekends, so as to control proper operation of the facilities. Employee will be required to maintain his/her Operator’s License in good standing.

DUTIES:

  • Operates such water treatment equipment as deep well pumps, centrifugal pumps, chemical addition systems (including lime, caustic, chlorine, phosphate, and fluoride), filters, and related motors. Also, operate related distribution equipment such as booster stations, pressure regulating valves, and water storage tanks.
  • Operates valves, starts and stops pumps and motors to control and adjust process and end product potable water flows.
  • Monitors gauges, meters, instrumentation, and control panels; Observes variations in operating conditions to determine processing requirements.
  • Monitors and controls operation of equipment remotely using the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system.
  • Inspects equipment such as bearings, valves, seals, filters, pumps, motors and other mechanical and electrical equipment; Makes request for repairs or replacement as necessary.
  • Obtains required samples at various stages and performs routine tests as needed by State and Federal agencies and to ensure proper operation of treatment plants.
  • Reads various charts, gauges and meters; records readings in shift logs; changes charts on a routine basis.
  • Makes daily rounds of assigned water facilities and distribution system; corrects any malfunctions and reports same to Supervisor.
  • Cleans tanks, filters, screens, pumps and other related equipment as needed.
  • Maintains all buildings, equipment, and grounds in a neat and orderly fashion, as required. This may include custodial-related tasks.
  • Maintains site access to facilities as needed. This may include snow removal.
  • Maintains records and may be required to submit reports. Performs data input into personal computer.
  • Respond to check for possible water leaks in mains and services and determine needed corrective action.
  • Performs water service shut off and turn on requests as needed.
  • Respond to customer complaints of water quality, pressure problems, or general complaints regarding water system.
  • Required to be “On Call”, and to respond to after hour problems.
  • Required to work overtime when required.
  • Perform any and all other appropriate functions as required.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a high school or vocational-technical school diploma, or a GED Certificate, AND satisfactory completion of the following courses or equivalent: 1) “Operation of Water or Wastewater Treatment Plants I” Sacramento course, and 2) “First Aid and Safety for Operations Personnel” Red Cross course.

Must possess a Water Operator License in all states that Artesian operates water facilities. Must obtain a Sampling Certification in all states that Artesian operates water distribution systems. Must possess valid driver's license and ability to obtain Commercial Driver's License with HAZMAT endorsement. Must possess working knowledge of personal computers.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Good knowledge of the principles, practices and methods used in water treatment operations and of the operation and servicing of water treatment equipment and machinery; of fundamental laboratory and sample collection techniques; of safe working practices and procedures. Basic math skills. Ability to perform inspections of pumps, valves, gauges and other mechanical and electrical equipment as directed; to maintain records; to work independently with minimum supervision; to work on a cooperative, courteous and effective basis with people; to read gauges and meters accurately; to operate basic hand tools; to climb, stoop, kneel, reach, lift, walk, and stand for prolonged periods of time; to have ability to lift up to 50 lbs; to drive a Company vehicle while carrying out some assignments. Worker is subject to atmospheric conditions, such as odors; chlorine gases;, to dusts; to noise; to inside and outside environmental conditions. Must be able to wear a negative-pressure respirator and/or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
