POSITION SUMMARY
Wastewater Operator I is an entry-level position responsible for learning the operation, inspection, monitoring, and routine maintenance of the Company's wastewater treatment, collection, pumping, and disposal systems. Under close supervision, the Operator I performs routine operational duties, assists with maintenance and troubleshooting, conducts required inspections and process control activities, and develops the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to advance within the wastewater operator career progression.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operate and monitor wastewater treatment plants, lift stations, pumping facilities, collection systems, disposal systems, and related equipment under the direction of senior operators or supervisors.
- Perform routine inspections of treatment processes, pumps, motors, blowers, valves, wet wells, tanks, chemical feed systems, and other wastewater infrastructure.
- Monitor SCADA systems, alarms, flow meters, equipment readings, and operating conditions; report abnormal conditions to the appropriate supervisor or senior operator.
- Collect wastewater samples and perform routine process control testing as assigned.
- Operate and monitor wastewater disposal systems, including spray irrigation, rapid infiltration basins, drip dispersal systems, and related equipment.
- Record operational information and complete required inspection logs, process control records, maintenance documentation, and other reports accurately and timely.
- Perform routine housekeeping, cleaning, grounds maintenance, and general upkeep of wastewater facilities.
- Assist with preventive maintenance, including lubrication and routine servicing of pumps, motors, valves, blowers, and other mechanical equipment.
- Assist senior operators and maintenance personnel with troubleshooting, equipment repairs, and corrective maintenance activities.
- Respond to operational alarms, sewer overflow events, and emergency call-outs under the direction of senior operators or supervisors.
- Follow established operating procedures, safety requirements, and applicable regulations, including confined space, Lockout/Tagout, chemical handling, and OSHA requirements.
- Maintain accurate work records and work orders
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment, including vehicles and job sites
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
- A valid driver's license with clean driving record in accordance with company and insurance standards
- Delaware Wastewater Operator Level I Operator’s License or the ability to obtain Delaware Wastewater Operator Level I License within one year.
- Basic mechanical aptitude.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in utilities, construction, or industrial maintenance.
- Basic computer knowledge.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Heavy- Exerting 50 to 100lbs of force occasionally and/or more than 50lbs. of force frequently and/or more than 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are more than those for Heavy work.
- Ability to climb, bend, stoop, and work around vehicles and equipment
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Ability to work in varied weather and environmental conditions
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Work performed indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Exposure to wastewater, weather, noise, chemicals, insects, and biological hazards.
- As conditions require, ability to wear respiratory protective equipment includes a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) for extended periods.
- Subject to on-call schedules, overtime, and emergency response duties
