SUMMARY

Arrow Structural Engineering is seeking a mid-level Engineering Technician whose primary strength is drafting and BIM. This is a hands-on, drawing-focused role for a detail-driven technician who is equally comfortable at the workstation and on site. You will serve as a lead producer of the firm’s construction drawings and Revit models, translating engineers’ markups and calculations into clean, coordinated, permit-ready structural documents. You will also support our team in the field on construction observation and site visits, helping gather the existing-condition information and conveying that to project engineers. The role is roughly 70% CAD and BIM production and 30% field work.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

CAD & Document Production

  • Produce the majority of the firm’s structural construction drawings in AutoCAD and Revit, from engineer redlines, sketches, and calculations.
  • Develop and maintain 3D BIM models (Revit) and coordinate structural elements with architectural and MEP backgrounds.
  • Create plans, sections, details, and schedules that meet Arrow’s drafting standards and applicable building codes.
  • Manage sheet setup, title blocks, layers, and drawing organization to keep document sets consistent and clean.
  • Incorporate revisions, addenda, and RFI responses accurately and on schedule throughout design and construction administration.
  • Maintain organized project files, drawing archives, and CAD/Revit standards and templates.

Field Work — Construction Observation & Conditional Assessment Site Visits

  • Visit job sites to verify existing conditions and observe structural work as it goes in — steel, reinforcing, framing, and foundations — checking it against the structural and architectural drawings.
  • Measure and document existing framing, foundations, and structural elements using tape, laser measures, and photos.
  • Prepare clear field notes, photos, and site inspection reports that translate directly into as-built drawings, and keep your supervisor updated with a brief daily summary.
  • Represent Arrow professionally on site, communicating with contractors, project managers, owners, and homeowners.
  • Follow site safety procedures, and flag any field discrepancies, safety concerns, or unexpected conditions to the responsible engineer promptly.

Team & Coordination

  • Work closely with project engineers to keep drawings aligned with the structural design intent.
  • Meet production deadlines across multiple concurrent projects in a high-volume practice.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of drafting workflows, templates, and BIM standards.
  • Assist in project close out and archiving.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Associate degree in civil engineering technology, or a bachelor’s degree in architecture/design, engineering, construction management, or a similar field.
  • A minimum of three years of related work experience or graduation from an accredited post-secondary program in CAD, drafting technology, design technology, or related field
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit (BIM); able to run drawing production independently.
  • Technical certificate in drafting, CAD, engineering technology, or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, engineer markups, and construction documents.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and follow-through on deadlines.
  • Physically capable of carrying out on-site assessments; climbing and dismounting ladders and/or scaffolding; willingness to access crawl spaces if needed.
  • Ability to  measure and document existing structures and provide detailed descriptions of visual condition
  • An understanding of customer service and client follow-up.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel regionally for site visits.

Preferred

  • 1–2 years in heavy or highway construction, with hands-on experience in framing, masonry, and structural steel.
  • Autodesk certification (AutoCAD and/or Revit).
  • Familiarity with structural systems — steel, concrete, masonry, and wood framing.
  • Experience with residential, light commercial, or heavy construction.
  • Exposure to structural analysis or documentation software (e.g., RAM, ENERCALC) is a plus.
