DESCRIPTION OF BASIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the general supervision of the school principal, performs a variety of clerical, technical, and paraprofessional duties in the school library/media center. Assists students and staff in accessing and utilizing library and media resources, while maintaining the organization, functionality, and accessibility of the collection. Supports and participates in STEAM and Maker Space programs and initiatives, fostering an innovative, hands-on learning environment that encourages creativity, collaboration, and project-based exploration. This position blends traditional library support with technology integration and creative learning facilitation to enhance student engagement and instructional support.
SUPERVISOR: Site Principal
TYPICAL DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Greet and assist students, staff, and visitors in the library/media center; maintain a welcoming, orderly, and student-centered space.
2. Perform circulation functions, including checking library books, materials and equipment in and out; inspect incoming materials for damage and perform minor repairs; notify and follow up on overdue items.
3. Schedule and conduct library, media and technology sessions for classes, provide instruction in basic research and digital learning skills; assist students and staff in locating and , read stories, show films, and make other presentations as assigned.
4. Maintain the library/media center in a neat and orderly condition; develop and set up displays, bulletin boards, and promotional materials to encourage reading and library use.
5. Maintain accurate records and prepare reports regarding circulation statistics, lost or damaged materials, media equipment usage, and volunteer hours.
6. Supervise students using the library/media center, ensuring proper behavior and adherence to library rules; train, direct and coordinate volunteer assistants in library procedures.
7. Assist in the selection, requisitioning, receiving, and processing of books, materials, and supplies; maintain inventory of library/media collections; recommend withdrawals or additions to the collection.
8. Assist the Curriculum and Instruction Department, as directed, with school site inventory and distribution of curriculum, science kits, and other resource materials to school staff.
9. Assist in planning, scheduling, and supporting STEAM-focused activities, such as maker-space sessions, robotics kits, coding clubs, digital fabrication (3D printers, laser cutters), and arts integration in technology projects and integrating them into classroom learning.
10. Collaborate with teachers, principal and District staff to integrate media center resources into project-based learning units across the curriculum.
11. Provide hands-on support to students during STEAM activities: assist with setup, safety protocols, equipment usage instructions, and clean-up.
12. Track usage of STEAM resources, monitor inventory of consumables, report repair/maintenance needs, and assist in procuring materials as needed.
13. Catalog and classify books and other materials using standard library systems and digital library software; maintain and update the library's catalog and shelf lists.
14. Collect payments for lost or damaged books and materials; maintain accurate financial records and submit reports as required.
15. Attend meetings and workshops related to school library operations, procedures, STEAM, Maker Space activities, and materials to stay current with best practices and library software.
16. Maintain and update the school’s website and online platforms to ensure accurate and current information; collaborate with site and district staff to post announcements, events, and resources in alignment with district communication standards.
17. Collaborate with site and district technology staff to integrate digital tools, media creation, and emerging technologies into library and classroom learning activities.
18. Perform other duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Knowledge of:
- Standard terminology, purposes, operations, and practices of a school library/media center, including STEAM and Maker Space programming.
- Proper English grammar, usage, vocabulary, and spelling;
- Library circulation and cataloging software;
- Principals of digital citizenship, safety, and responsible technology use;
- Operation of library-related technology and software;
- Basic reference sources and research techniques;
Ability to:
- Perform library clerical functions, including circulation and material distribution;
- Communicate effectively in both oral and written forms;
- Perform specialized library/computer work with speed and accuracy;
- Train, direct, and monitor volunteers;
- Perform mathematical calculations;
- Establish and maintain accurate records and filing systems;
- Operate standard office and library equipment, including computers, audiovisual devices, and educational technology tools;

EXPERIENCE:
Experience working in a public or school library, media, or Maker Space environment with modern technological and STEAM-related equipment and resource materials is preferred, but not required.
Bilingual preferred.
EDUCATION:
High school diploma or equivalent.
In addition, complete:
- Two years of study (48 semester units) at an institution of higher education; or
- Obtain an associate’s (or higher) degree from an institution of higher education; or
- Pass a District-selected assessment demonstrating knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Current CPR/First Aid Certificate (within 6 months of employment and maintained as outlined by the issuing authority).
