Director of Medicinal Chemistry – Nucleic Acids:
Arnatar is seeking a Director of Medicinal Chemistry – Nucleic Acids. This Executive level R&D position requires strategic thinking, an ability to work pro-actively and collaboratively, portfolio mindset and deep scientific expertise across several of the following disciplines: Applicants should have strong experience in oligonucleotide drug synthesis and optimization with a proven track record in delivering clinical candidates. Working as part of a cross-functional team spanning chemistry, biology, analytical sciences, pharmacology, DMPK, and toxicology, the candidate will also manage collaborations and CRO resources as needed. This candidate must have a “can do” attitude with a hands-on approach, being in the lab with direct reports and staff.
Role and responsibilities:
- Lead medicinal chemistry efforts simultaneously on multiple projects from the earliest stages through clinical development
- Ensure the success of chemistry aspects of the drug discovery teams through individual contributions, project leadership, and thorough mentorship of direct reports as emerging chemistry project leaders
- Ensure and execute internal oligonucleotide synthesis activities to support research and drug discovery in a timely manner
- Provide leadership, direction, and contribute to project delivery through motivation, collaborative working, and development of people and line competence within the function
- Demonstrate expertise in drug design and medicinal chemistry strategies to improve drug-likeness, ADME/DMPK, and safety properties
- Develop and execute strategy to protect and expand intellectual property
- Oversee external chemistry CROs as needed
- Collaborate with the executive team to develop a strategy for building and supporting highly innovative platforms
Required qualifications:
- Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry or related major with 7 years, MS with 10 years of pharmaceutical medicinal chemistry in the synthesis or manufacturing of oligonucleotides.
- Experience in the following areas:
- Solid experience in oligonucleotide synthesis is required
- Bioconjugation chemistry is preferred
- Cell delivery technologies is a plus
- Understanding of the IP and regulatory landscape around oligonucleotide therapeutics
- Experience in building robust data packages to support IND filings
- High level of creativity and productivity with strong problem-solving skills, synthetic methods, and reaction mechanisms and analytical methodology
- Extensive experience in program leadership with a demonstrated track record of driving data-based scientific decision-making
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, ability to build and maintain relationships with colleagues at all levels of the organization
- Demonstrated ability to advance drug discovery programs from biological targets to delivery of development compounds
Preferred Qualifications:
- Desire to work with the team in the lab making novel oligos and developing new processes
- Experience interacting with CMOs for GLPtox batch and GMP synthesis
