About the Position: Serves as a member of a firefighting team within the Directorate of Emergency Services located on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document.

Experience and/or Education Requirements:

GS-04:
You must meet one of the following:
A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that includes which includes: Following detailed instructions to assist with basic firefighting duties, such as using and/or maintaining basic firefighting equipment; or maintaining a clean environment in the department facilities. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03).
B. Education: Two years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or other related fields of study. (NOTE: You MUST attach a copy of your transcripts.)
C. Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of the specialized experience listed in "A" and the education listed in "B" above. (To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.) (NOTE: You MUST attach a copy of your transcripts.)

GS-05: You must meet one of the following:
A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: Assisting with controlling and extinguishing fires to prevent loss of life and/or property; or assisting with performing rescue operations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the Federal service, (GS-04).
B. Education: Successful completion of four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study. (NOTE: You MUST attach a copy of your transcripts.)
C. Combination of Experience and Education: A combination of the specialized experience listed in "A" and the education listed in "B" above. (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.) (NOTE: You MUST attach a copy of your transcripts.)

GS-06:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: Assisting with controlling and extinguishing fires to prevent loss of life and/or property; assisting with performing rescue operations; and assisting with operating or equipping emergency vehicles for fire and emergency response. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the Federal service, (GS-05).

NOTE: For the GS-06 grade level you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.


GS-07:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: Participating in controlling and extinguishing fires to prevent loss of life and/or property; performing rescue operations; participating in controlling hazardous materials incidents; assisting with patient examinations to provide basic first aid; and driving emergency vehicles such as pumpers, aerial ladder trucks, crash rescue trucks. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the Federal service, (GS-06).

NOTE: For the GS-07 grade level you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.


In additionto meeting the experience requirements above, applicants must also possess the following certifications through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M, AND a State or National Registry EMT Certification Card indicating a future expiration date when applicable:

5. Driver Operator - Mobile Water Supply
6. Driver Operator - ARFF

GS-07:
1. Firefighter I
2. Firefighter II
3. Airport Firefighter
4. Driver Operator - Pumper
5. Driver Operator - Mobile Water Supply
6. Driver Operator - ARFF
7. HAZMAT Technician
8. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)-Basic or equivalent certification. (You will be required to obtain Washington State EMT reciprocity if you do not have Washington State EMT certification).

NOTE: This position may be filled at the GS-04, GS-05, GS-06, or at the full-performance grade level, GS-07. If filled below the full performance grade level, you will have non-competitive promotion potential to the GS-07 (through the intervening grades) when all work can be performed at that level and all other applicable requirements have been met. ***For eligibility for non-competitive promotion to the next grade level, you must be fully certified at the next higher grade level before being eligible for promotion to that grade***

Salary : $37,473 - $67,514
