Job Overview
The General Manager is responsible for all facility activity. Responsibilities include the day-to-day operations of an inland river dry-bulk facility; managing the safety of the employee population in conjunction with the Director of Safety and Compliance; managing environmental issues; managing human resources, customer relations, truck, rail and barge operations and equipment maintenance,
Recommended Years of Experience:
5 years of progressive operational, management and/or supervisory experience.
Responsibilities:
- Manage and direct all aspects of material handling and storage operations throughout the facility.
- Plan daily work schedules for facility personnel to maximize efficiency and productivity while maintaining safety and environmental compliance.
- Monitor customer product inventory levels to ensure product inventories are accurate and loss is minimized.
- Manage and direct the cleaning and suitability for use of all equipment and storage areas within the facility.
- Conduct periodic inspections of the facility equipment and grounds to ensure continued efficient operations and to ensure customer material is free from the possibility of becoming contaminated.
- Communicate and plan barge arrivals and departures with barge transportation companies.
- Communicate and plan truck deliveries and shipments with trucking companies.
- Communicate and plan rail deliveries and shipments with railroads.
- Plan for efficient loading and unloading of barges, trucks and railcars in order to eliminate or minimize demurrage.
- Ensure the safety of personnel and equipment through personal safety inspections, employee training and heightened awareness. Ensure immediate corrective action is taken for non-compliance.
- Work with the Director of Safety and Compliance to ensure personnel compliance with safety regulations including respirator fit testing, forklift training, hazardous communications training, etc.
- Develop, implement and maintain an equipment maintenance program to ensure equipment is maintained to the highest possible level to ensure equipment availability when needed.
- Work with Maintenance Director or outside contractor(s) when maintenance requirements exceed abilities of terminal personnel.
- Work with corporate management to ensure the facility is in compliance with the Food Safety Act.
Requirements
- Proven experience in the transportation, material handling and/or agricultural field. Management experience a plus;
- Solid understanding of local, state and federal maritime, health, safety and environmental rules and regulations;
- Knowledge of computers including MS Office products;
- Ability to develop reports, policies and spreadsheets using MS Excel and MS Word;
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational and motivational skills;
- Excellent observation capabilities and attention to detail;
- A satisfactory driving record as determined by the company and a current, valid state driver's license.
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Bachelor's degree in Business Management or similar field preferred.
- Must be willing to carry a cell phone and be able and willing to respond at any hour of the day or night to all after hours and/or weekend issues, including emergency situations.
- Must be able to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
- May be required to work outside in varying and sometimes extreme weather conditions including both winter conditions with frequent snow or extreme summer heat and sun.
- Extended periods of sitting may be required for administrative activites.
- Must wear Personal Protective Equipment when necessary.
