Job Summary
We are looking for a knowledgeable and customer-focused Lumber Yard Associate to join our team. In this hands-on role, you will help customers select the right lumber, building materials, and supplies for their projects while providing excellent service in a fast-paced outdoor retail environment. You will also assist with sales of hardware, tools, and related products, support minor repair or DIY needs, and process transactions efficiently using our point-of-sale system.
Key Responsibilities
- Greet and assist customers in a friendly, professional manner
- Help customers determine the appropriate types, grades, and sizes of lumber and building materials based on their project requirements
- Provide product knowledge and recommendations for wood species, treated lumber, plywood, dimensional lumber, and other materials
- Assist customers with DIY projects by suggesting additional hardware, fasteners, adhesives, and accessories needed to complete their jobs
- Recommend and sell hand tools, power tools, safety equipment, and other related products
- Support customers with minor repair projects by offering practical advice and product solutions
- Load and unload lumber, plywood, and building materials for customers (forklift experience is a plus)
- Operate a point-of-sale (POS) system to process sales, returns, and payments accurately
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized lumber yard and sales area
- Restock merchandise and ensure product displays are well-maintained
- Answer customer questions regarding pricing, availability, and product specifications
- Work outdoors in various weather conditions while providing outstanding service
Qualifications & Requirements
- Previous experience in a lumber yard, building materials store, home improvement retail (e.g., Home Depot, Lowe’s), or construction preferred
- Strong knowledge of lumber types, grades, sizes, and common building materials
- Ability to read building plans or understand basic construction/DIY project needs is a plus but not required.
- Comfortable using a point-of-sale system and basic computer skills
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
- Physically capable of lifting heavy materials (up to 50–80 lbs), bending, standing for long periods, and working outdoors
- Forklift certification or willingness to obtain one is highly desirable
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work flexible hours including Saturdays and holidays
- Schedule is Monday through Saturday; closed on Sundays
