Job Description
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Arlington County requires all applicants to thoroughly complete each section of the application, including prior job responsibilities, duties, and supplemental questions. While you may attach a resume, it will not replace a completed application. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Arlington County’s Police Department (ACPD) is seeking to hire multiple School Crossing Guards for Arlington Public Schools (APS) located around the County to provide vehicular and pedestrian traffic control and to promote maximum safety efforts in the movement of children to and from schools.
APS serves a diverse population, including parents and children from whom English is a second language. The work is normally limited to hours during which school is open, recessing, or closing, but may change at short notice due to bad weather or other emergencies.
Responsibilities
Major Job Duties:
Directing vehicle and pedestrian traffic at school crossings and assisting school children and other pedestrians crossing the street;
Reporting accidents and directing traffic until officers arrive;
Promoting safety awareness and advising officers of safety problems at school crossings; and
Performing bi-annual pedestrian and vehicle counts at crossings.
The successful candidate will:
Report to worksite promptly either with personal or public transportation;
Be accessible during school hours by telephone in order to respond to emergency schedule changes;
Exercise mature and alert judgement;
Contend firmly and courteously with the public, particularly school age children; and
Be willing to work in all types of weather.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
No experience required.
Desirable Qualifications: Preference may be given to applicants with experience in one or more of the following:
Working as a crossing guard; and/or
Providing customer service to the public.
Special Requirements
Background Check/Polygraph: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It will include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. Due to the sensitive nature of this position, candidates receiving consideration will also be required to undergo a pre-employment polygraph examination conducted by the Police Department. You will be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
Driver's License: Applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver’s license, and must provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon favorable review of the applicant’s driving record. Alternatively, the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite.
Please complete each section of the application including the supplemental questions. Your responses to the supplemental questions are required because they provide us with specific information necessary to evaluate your qualifications for this position. These responses are considered part of the selection process. A resume may be attached; however, it will not substitute for a completed application. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Please do not write "see resume" as a response to the questions.
Additional Information
Work hours: Part time, crossing guards typically work 12.5 hours per week, Monday - Friday. Hours are determined by the needs and schedule of the particular school to which the guard is assigned. Schedules are subject to change on short notice due to inclement weather or other emergencies. Some weekend and holiday work may be required for special events such as parades, marathons, fairs, summer school, etc.
Starting salary is commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate selected.
