At Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center (AVRMC), we recognize that Medical Surgical nurses are essential to providing exceptional care across a wide range of patient needs. We are seeking a skilled, compassionate, and adaptable Registered Nurse to join our Medical Surgical team in La Junta.

Position Summary

As a Medical Surgical Registered Nurse, you will provide direct and indirect patient care in the Medical Surgical setting. This position requires strong assessment skills, sound clinical judgment, effective communication, and the ability to respond quickly to changes in patient condition. The Medical Surgical RN collaborates with physicians, nursing leadership, and interdisciplinary team members to ensure safe, efficient, and patient-centered care.

This is a Full-Time position within our Medical Surgical Department.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Assessment & Nursing Care

• Provide direct and indirect patient care for pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients

• Perform comprehensive head-to-toe assessments and reassessments according to department standards

• Monitor patient conditions and communicate significant changes to physicians, nursing leadership, and appropriate staff

• Respond quickly and accurately to changes in patient condition or response to treatment

• Revise care plans based on patient response and evaluate effectiveness of the plan of care daily

• Coordinate and supervise patient care activities as appropriate

• Demonstrate competency in performing treatments and nursing services

Medication Administration & Clinical Interventions

• Administer medications safely and accurately according to physician orders and nursing standards

• Demonstrate knowledge of medications based on patient age, diagnosis, and clinical condition

• Assist physicians with procedures and perform services requiring technical and manual skills

• Operate and manage medical equipment safely and correctly

• Maintain patient safety through adherence to established standards and practices

Patient & Family Education

• Develop individualized patient teaching plans based on identified learning needs

• Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatments, medications, and pain management strategies

• Evaluate the effectiveness of patient and family learning

• Involve patients and families in the development of the plan of care

• Foster an environment of respect, dignity, and compassionate care

Care Coordination & Communication

• Communicate professionally with physicians, nursing leadership, coworkers, and other healthcare providers

• Collaborate with other departments to provide an interdisciplinary approach to patient care

• Function as a liaison between administration, patients, physicians, and other healthcare professionals

• Maintain positive working relationships within the department and throughout the organization

• Assist with discharge planning and communicate patient needs to social services and care coordination teams

Documentation & Quality Care

• Maintain accurate, complete, and timely documentation in accordance with current standards and policies

• Address psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and spiritual needs of patients and families

• Assist in implementing and monitoring core measures

• Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives

• Support departmental goals and organizational performance improvement efforts

Qualifications

Required

• Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing

• Current Colorado Registered Nurse (RN) License or Compact RN License

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification

• Strong assessment, critical thinking, and clinical decision-making skills

• Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team

• Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and professionalism

• Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced healthcare environment

Preferred

• Previous Medical Surgical or acute care nursing experience

• Experience caring for pediatric, adult, and geriatric patient populations

• Experience with electronic health records (EHR)

• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certification

• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification
