CAREER DEVELOPMENT INTERN (HIGH SCHOOL)

 

JOB SUMMARY

 

The Career Development Intern (High School) participates in a structured, supervised, rotational internship program designed to provide educational and career exposure to various functions within Arizona Water Company, including Safety, Operations, Customer Service, and administrative support.

 

Under the supervision and guidance of an assigned AWC Mentor, the intern will observe departmental operations, assist with approved non-hazardous assignments, and gain practical knowledge of water utility services, workplace safety, customer service, and business operations. The intern may also receive guidance from designated AWC employees during departmental rotations.

 

This is a temporary, unpaid, part-time, non-benefit-eligible internship intended for educational and career development purposes. Internship activities may be coordinated with the participating school's Career and Technical Education (CTE) program or other approved academic or career development program, as applicable.

 

INTERNSHIP ACTIVITIES & LEARNING ASSIGNMENTS

 

The Career Development Intern may participate in a variety of approved, non-hazardous, supervised learning activities and assignments, which may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

General / Rotational Exposure

  • Participate in scheduled rotations across approved program areas, which may include Safety, Operations, Customer Service, and administrative functions.
  • Observe daily operations and workflows.
  • Assist with approved basic tasks that support learning objectives.
  • Complete assigned educational projects or learning activities.

 

Safety – Observation & Administrative Support

  • Assist with organizing safety materials and documentation.
  • Observe approved safety meetings, inspections, and compliance activities.
  • Support administrative tracking of safety records and training documentation.
  • Interns will not participate in accident investigations, hazardous activities, or activities restricted by applicable age-based work requirements.

 

Operations (Observation & Administrative Support Only)

  • Assist with filing logs, reports, and operational records
  • Support inventory tracking or documentation efforts
  • Observe approved field operations, job sites, and system maintenance activities from designated safe areas and under direct supervision.
  • Interns will not perform field labor, operate equipment, or engage in hazardous work.

 

Customer Service

  • Observe customer service interactions and processes.
  • Assist with approved filing, data entry, and document preparation.
  • Support basic administrative activities related to customer service processes.
  • Observe and, when appropriate, assist with customer inquiries under direct supervision.

 

Administrative Support

  • Assist with approved typing, filing, scanning, and document organization.
  • Assist with preparation of reports, logs, and other administrative materials.
  • Participate in basic clerical activities that support the intern's learning objectives.

 

Additional Responsibilities

  • Attend meetings, trainings, and workshops as assigned
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area
  • Participate in other approved, non-hazardous learning activities consistent with the internship program, the intern's age, and applicable safety requirements.
Qualifications:

SKILLS, ABILITIES & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

The required skills, knowledge, and abilities include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Ability to follow instructions and complete assigned tasks
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, email)
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to interact with supervisors, employees, and customers in a professional manner
  • Dependable, punctual, and willing to learn
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and perform light physical activities associated with approved internship assignments.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds in connection with approved office or administrative activities.

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

 

The following are required:

  • Current high school junior or senior.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Must meet the eligibility requirements of the participating school.
  • Participation in a CTE program or other approved school-based academic or career development program, as applicable.
  • Basic familiarity with computers and office equipment.
  • Willingness to learn and actively participate in a structured internship program.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT & RESTRICTIONS

 

  • Participation in the internship is contingent upon successful completion of all applicable pre-internship requirements, which may include a background check and drug and alcohol screening.
  • For interns under age 18, written parent/guardian consent must be obtained before AWC conducts applicable pre-internship screening and before the internship begins.
  • Interns under the age of 18 are not permitted to operate Company vehicles under any circumstances.
  • Interns age 18 or older may operate a Company vehicle only if authorized by AWC and eligible to drive under applicable Company policy and insurance requirements.
  • Work is performed in office and field observation settings
  • Intern will be supervised by an assigned Arizona Water Company employee at all times
  • Interns will not perform work prohibited by applicable federal or Arizona child labor laws and may be restricted from other duties, equipment, or work areas based on age, safety, training, supervision, or operational considerations.
  • Interns under the age of 18 are not permitted to operate company vehicles under any circumstances.
  • Interns who are 18 years of age or older but under 21 may only operate company vehicles if authorized by the Company, accepted as insured drivers by the company’s insurer, and upon completion of safe driver training and signing of required agreements.

 

COMPENSATION & SCHEDULE

 

  • Temporary, unpaid, part-time internship; not benefits eligible
  • Up to 12 hours per week, generally not to exceed 3 hours per day on a school day.
  • The internship schedule will be coordinated with AWC, the intern, and the participating school, as applicable, and must comply with applicable age-based work-hour restrictions and school requirements.
