Job Description:
This position will be working within the Bioinformatics Core at ASU to provide support in biological data analysis primarily with regards to the Earth Biogenome Project. In this context, large eukaryotic genome assembly and annotation are the primary responsibilities of this position. Understanding of HPC schedulers, Conda and container-based environments, version control tools, and workflow programming languages are important skills for this position, as development and maintenance of scripts in bash and Nextflow will be required.
Given the size and scope of the Earth Biogenome Project, strong communication skills are essential, as is the ability to work well both independently and in the context of a team.
There is potential to participate in and assist with other bioinformatics projects within the core, so the ideal candidate will have experience with multiple types of bioinformatics analysis and familiarity with open-source bioinformatics tools. Additionally, they will be able to meet new and unexpected challenges with initiative and creativity while keeping multiple responsibilities prioritized and organized.

Essential Duties:
- Running assembly and annotation workflows in Nextflow, incorporating input data from PacBio, Hi-C, and potentially Illumina RNA sequencing
- Optimizing, updating, and developing pipeline scripts as needed, using ASU’s Sol supercomputer.
- Tracking and communicating project status with team members and clients
- Organizing and visualizing analysis results to share effectively with team members and collaborators; creating data summaries with words and images.
- Supporting team members with other tasks and analysis projects as needed.
- PhD plus years of relevant experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
- Experience using R, Python, Bash, Nextflow, and Singularity
- Experience with assembly and annotation of large genomes
- Familiarity with long and short read sequencing, including Hi-C data
- Ability to communicate professionally with collaborators, teammates, and clients in both spoken and written formats.
- Located in the Phoenix, Arizona area and be able to commute to the Tempe campus on a regular basis.
- Attention to detail with regards to experimental design, data quality, script parameters, analysis output, and communication of methods and results.
- Will primarily be working in an indoor office/lab building that houses both the Bioinformatics and Genomics cores.
- Flexible scheduling and hybrid work options are available following initial onboarding.
- Regular activities require ability to manage multiple tasks at one time, to be able to prioritize tasks, to interact in a team environment, and to communicate through verbal and written work.
- Climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of being in a stationary position.
- Constantly detects and operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine and computer printer.
- Ability to clearly communicate and exchange accurate information to perform essential duties.
