Under general supervision, the Area Director provides leadership to an area of residential communities. Leadership will include supervision, programming, advising, building connections with students and developing inclusive and welcoming communities that enhance the academic support, facilitates student success, and embraces a sense of pride, tradition and affinity within the residential students. This position is required to live on campus within the residential community area to be available to, present for, and accessible to the students and residential community team.

Essential Duties

  • Supervises and evaluates professional and student staff to develop and activate a robust residential experience in the assigned residential communities
  • Fosters and enhances the relationship with academic college partners to assist in cultivating a vibrant residential community experience for residents.
  • Develops and implements strategies for the recruitment, selection, and training of professional and student staff.
  • Directs an area of residential communities including administrative and programmatic functions.
  • Coaches, advises, mentors and provides referrals for students
  • Provides direction to professional staff on program planning, implementation, and assessment to ensure sufficient quality experiences that meets residents’ developmental needs.
  • Collaborates with campus partners to provide services within the residential communities.
  • Oversees or performs administrative tasks such as assigning student rooms, entering maintenance requests to the work order system, scheduling student employees, and preparing payroll documents; monitors desk payroll, office supply and Hall Council budgets to ensure fiscally sound, accurate, and responsive residential community management.
  • Prepares reports and records to show staffing needs, programming efforts, and student statistical data for use in decisions.
  • Reviews and authorizes expenditures for the residential community, ensuring that budgetary guidelines are followed.
  • Provides management and oversight of residential front desks for residential community area
  • Resides on campus to provide additional staffing support and management of critical incidents and emergencies, which requires elevated care.
  • Coordinates and implements response to crisis within residential communities, in collaboration with appropriates University agencies.
  • Collaborates with Housing Facilities team to walk communities, take ownership of the infrastructure, and to address facilities and/or building security and safety guidelines.
  • Responsible for cultivating a welcoming, inclusive community
  • Addresses student behavior via the Code of Conduct process in the residential communities.
  • Advises student organizations
  • Provides customer service to a variety of constituents
  • Responds to emergencies and activates appropriate emergency support services
  • Participates in Residential Life and/or University teams and committees.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND three (3) years' related experience, including one year of supervisory experience.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of administrative operations of a residential community.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting and budgetary practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of supervisory practices and principles.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of human development theory and practices.
  • Evidence of coordinating and prioritizing work and activities of self and others.
  • Evidence of effective communication.
  • Evidence of establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Evidence of working with a diverse student resident population and with a wide variety of campus professional staff (counselors, police, health professionals, etc.).
  • Experience in the development of programming.
  • Experience in teaching and facilitating in and out of class experiences.
  • Experience in training and managing behavioral education as required in a residence hall complex.
  • Experience in preparing detailed and complex numerical computations and reports.
  • Experience in the use of computer technology in performing work responsibilities.

  • Travel throughout campus for meetings or events, regardless of the weather

  • Sit or stand for prolonged periods of time
