Job Summary Overview

The Portfolio Manager I is responsible for the ongoing management, credit quality, and risk oversight of a defined portfolio of lower-to moderate-risk commercial loan relationships, operating within established credit policies and guidelines. This role supports the credit union’s mission by ensuring sound credit administration, proactive risk management, and exceptional service to business members. Portfolio Manager I serves as a primary point of contact for assigned borrowers and works closely with Commercial Loan Officers, Credit Administration Leadership, and underwriting partners to maintain portfolio performance, regulatory compliance, and timely servicing of commercial credit relationships. This role focuses on execution, monitoring, and credit administration, with more complex or non-standard credit structures reviewed in collaboration with senior credit staff.

Credit Analysis & Portfolio Management

  • Manage a delegated portfolio of commercial loans, generally consisting of lower-complexity relationships, ensuring credit quality, accurate risk ratings, and adherence to credit union policies and regulatory requirements. Analyze historical and projected financial statements for businesses, principals, and guarantors to assess repayment capacity and overall credit risk.
  • Identify borrower, industry, and market risks based on operational history, ownership structure, legal entity type, and economic trends, and escalate elevated or complex risk considerations to senior credit leadership. Identify and escalate credit deterioration and recommend loss mitigation actions while proactively maintaining accurate risk grades.

Reviews, Renewals & Modifications

  • Prepare comprehensive Credit Reviews summarizing borrower performance, financial condition, risk profile, collateral position, and loan structure.
  • Recommends risk ratings, verifies covenant compliance and recommends modifications when appropriate.
  • Underwrites renewals and modifications within established policy parameters and obtains approvals in accordance with policy and procedures, escalating non-standard terms, higher-risk relationships, or complex structures as required. Credit recommendations are subject to review and guidance from senior credit staff.

Documentation, Compliance & Monitoring

  • Review commercial loan files for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with approval conditions and regulatory standards.
  • Monitor reports to ensure timely receipt of financial statements, compliance certificates, borrowing base reports, and covenant testing.
  • Conduct site visits and collateral inspections as required, typically for routine monitoring purposes.

Borrower & Internal Relationship Management

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for assigned borrowers, responding to servicing requests and coordinating with internal partners as needed, with support from Commercial Loan Officers or senior credit staff for more complex borrower matters. Participate with Commercial Loan Officers in borrower meetings.
  • Prepare for and facilitate borrower discussions related to performance, risk, renewals, and servicing needs.
  • Maintain current knowledge of borrower relationships, industries, and market conditions to support informed credit decisions.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Monitor past-due loans and follow up to ensure timely resolution.
  • May assist with special assets, workouts, liquidations, and OREO as assigned, under the direction of senior credit leadership.
  • Maintain proficiency in commercial lending systems and Credit Administration tools.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Position Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related field or a minimum of 3 years of commercial lending experience

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Strong working knowledge of commercial lending, SBA 7(a) and 504 programs, and applicable compliance and credit regulations.
  • Strong ability to analyze complex financial statements, cash flow, and credit structures, with exposure to more complex analyses gained through experience and guidance
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce clear, well-supported credit memoranda.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • High level of professionalism, sound judgment, and attention to detail.
  • Collaborative mindset with a commitment to teamwork and the overall success of the credit union.
  • Ability to interpret policy, apply credit judgment, and escalate issues appropriately.

Hybrid Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • Occasional lifting, 25 pounds or less.
  • Sitting and standing for extended periods of time.
  • Working on a computer for extended periods of time.
