ARIZONA DEPT OF HEALTH SERVICES

The Arizona State Hospital (ASH) provides inpatient psychiatric care to persons with serious mental illness who need long-term behavioral health care. ASH promotes hope and wellness for our patients and creates opportunities to participate in planning, delivering and evaluating services that assist with recovery. Treatment is individualized with goals that focus on education about an illness, instilling hope and improving one's overall quality of life. The Arizona State Hospital has a wide range of positions available, from our direct care staff, Nurses and Behavioral Health Technicians to Social Workers, Rehabilitation Specialist and Security to name a few. The Arizona State Hospital also offers 12 hour shifts for our Direct Care staff as well as some alternative work schedules, flexible hours for non-direct care staff. Job Summary

The Psychologist participates as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team, providing psychological services to the patients on a civil or forensic inpatient unit who experience a variety of mental health issues including serious mental illness. Consults with staff of other disciplines to determine effective treatment interventions. Performs psychological evaluations that might include violence risk assessment, neuropsychological assessment, psychological evaluation for diagnostic clarification, and evaluations of competency to stand trial. Conducts individual and group therapy. Develops behavior plans to address aggression, self-injury, and other maladaptive behaviors. Participates in training of psychology interns and practicum students. Offers educational training to hospital staff on a variety of topics as needed. Provides documentation of all services performed. May direct and supervise the work of professional psychologists or therapists in the provision of services to patients. Provides psychological consulting services to the various treatment teams and units within the institution. Coordinates the work of the psychology component with that of other elements of the treatment program; reviews program accomplishments and recommends desirable changes; ensures that the services being provided are in keeping with approved goals and recent advances in the field and evaluates program accomplishments; provides consultation to related agencies and universities; encourages the continued professional development of unit staff and trainees.

Job Duties

  • Participates as a member of a treatment team, providing psychological services that includes developing programs, behavior plans, treatment plans, consultation with teams and staff, and directly talking with patients and providing therapy to patients on the unit.
  • Conducts psychological evaluations.
  • Provides individual and group therapy.
  • Provides clinical supervision to interns/students.
  • Participates in continuing education and offers training to hospital staff.
  • Engages in other duties (e.g., cognitive remediation program) as needed
  • Other duties as assigned as related to the position (typically 5% - 10%)


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge Of:

  • Techniques and procedures for psychological counseling and therapy
  • Comprehensive knowledge of psychological screening, testing and evaluations
  • Contemporary thoughts and trends in psychology, sociology and mental health,
  • Research methods and techniques to include data analysis and psychological measurements
  • Report writing.
  • Performance Management (PM), and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and Lean methodologies.


Skills In

  • Providing psychological treatment and therapy to individuals and groups in accordance with professional and ethical standards.

Ability To

  • Work effectively with and consult with a multidisciplinary team
  • Provide timely documentation for assessment and treatment activities, administer, score and interpret a variety of psychological tests accurately and effectively
  • Write summaries and reports of professional quality, perform counseling and therapy services with individuals and groups.
  • Provide clinical oversight to professionals and paraprofessionals

Selective Preference(s): The ideal candidate will have:

  • Training in a wide range of psychological assessments and 1 year of professional experience as a licensed psychologist or training experience with forensic or civil populations.
  • Experience working with individuals with a history of sexual offending, treatment, or assessment preferred, but not required. Preference given to applicants with Public Health experience.


Pre-Employment Requirements

A State Hospital employee must be able to obtain a valid Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card pursuant to A.R.S.

  • 41-1758.07. Must have a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology. Must be licensed as a Psychologist in the State of Arizona or be license eligible and receive licensure from the Board of Psychologist Examiners within one year of appointment.


Driving is required for State Business.

Employees who drive on state business require possession of and the ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any driver training (See Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.11).

Retirement

To help you build a financially secure future, the State makes monthly contributions to finance your retirement benefit. The State will make a contribution to the ASRS in an amount equal to your contribution. In other words, you and the State will each pay 50% of the total cost of the benefit. New State employees have a 27 week wait period for contributions to begin.
