General Job Brief:
Academic peer tutors serve ACU students by assisting with academic success strategies. The primary responsibility of a tutor is to support students to become more independent learners, persist in college, and reach their goals. Tutors provide individual and/or group tutoring to students across a broad range of courses based on their personal area of expertise. Tutors meet with students to clarify and review concepts taught in class, explain processes, and help students solve specific problems.
This role also requires a comprehensive understanding of and commitment to the unique Christian mission and vision of ACU to Transform Culture with Truth, and the ability to advance that mission and vision through the performance of its duties, including person-to-person mentorship and discipleship.
Primary Duties:
- Attend all scheduled tutoring appointments
- Provide subject-specific expertise to peers in individual and group tutoring contexts
- Recognize the different learning styles and student preferences
- Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students’ diverse cultures, language skills, and experiences
- Use active listening strategies to allow student to determine content and pace of tutoring
- Use listening and questioning strategies as the primary tutoring method to diagnose student needs and monitor progress
- Employ feedback and reflection to improve practice
- Recognize primary role is to help students become more confident, more successful, self-directed learners
- Be direct and kind with students and possess good interpersonal communication skills
- Provide direct assistance in the use of equipment, learning objects, and materials needed for student success
- Make appropriate referrals to other campus and community resources as needed
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Communicate with the ACE Coordinator regarding any challenges, problems, or needs you may have as a tutor
- Track tutoring sessions in digital logbook
- Input time worked into Paycom for compensation purposes
- Conduct oneself with utmost integrity and professionalism
- Completing other duties and tasks with utmost integrity and professionalism, as directed, and not necessarily mentioned in this description, will be expected
- Commitment to the University’s faith statement, mission, and purposes; and an active Christian faith
- Comfort and familiarity with the practice of praying with and for others, including students, faculty, and fellow University staff
- The ability to meaningfully support and encourage students, faculty, and staff from a biblical worldview perspective, using relevant and applicable references from the Old and New Testaments and orthodox Christian writings
Qualifications:
- Personal relationship with Jesus Christ as well as a commitment to ACU's Statement of Faith and Core values
- Must be currently enrolled as a student at ACU
- Have and maintain a cumulative and semester GPA of 3.5 or above
- Received an A in the tutored course selected, and a course taken at the ACU is preferred
- Possess good interpersonal communication skills
- Be available to work 5-10 hours per week in between 9 am and 9 pm Monday to Friday. Your shifts will be scheduled around your class times
