Position Summary: As an Adult Peer Support Specialist (APSS), you will provide essential support and guidance to individuals facing challenges related to addiction and mental health. Reporting to the program coordinator, your role will involve mentoring clients, utilizing your skills in addiction counseling and social work. You will also employ crisis intervention and management techniques to assist clients in navigating difficult situations
Pre-Employment Requirements:
- Drug test
- Criminal Background check – over one year since previous disqualifying conviction
- TB skin test: Must have a test or provide proof of one within the past year.
- Must have a valid driver’s license with reliable transportation.
- High school diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
- Provide proof of Peer Support Specialist certificate or equivalent.
- Must be able to attest to at least 1 year of sobriety.
Skill Sets: Demonstrate good oral and written communications. Maintain a supportive and encouraging working relationship with supervisors, leaders and clients. Must have basic computer skills. Demonstrate a non-judgmental and non-biased disposition towards clients. Be able to provide a structured environment within the facility.
Physical and Environmental Demands: Visual acuity and manual dexterity needed for required paperwork. Frequent talking and hearing are necessary when communicating with co-workers, families, and other service providers. Physical demands are light with walking, standing, and occasional stooping.
Job Responsibilities:
1. Provide quality customer service to personnel, persons-served, families, and
stakeholders.
2. Help maintain the health safety and welfare of personnel, person served and
stakeholders.
3. Do not leave the facility unless approved by the supervisor.
4. Keep and monitor the phone and answer it, complete screenings and take
messages.
5. Ensure and maintain client confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations.
6. Participate in night and morning meditation.
7. Walk around the facility and complete 1-hour checks of each client or 30 minutes
if client is on detox protocol.
8. Collaborate with Program Manager and facility staff in program development.
9. Assist in the Quality Assurance of the agency.
10. Participate in staff meetings; monthly or as directed.
11. Assist in the supervision of clients and respond to all requests and emergencies
during duty hours.
12. Actively encourage and promote client involvement in classes/program.
13. Assist clients in their adjustment to community living.
14. Assist with medication observation.
15. Evaluate/monitor/observe/document group attendance and participation in
collaboration with clinical team.
16. Verbally de-escalate tense or aggressive situations to calm clients.
17. Address and document all aggressive behaviors on the incident report form.
18. Hold accountability.
19. Check facility and bed areas for proper cleanliness: beds must be made, no items
should be on top of lockers or nightstands, etc.
20. Monitor client visitations and observe the sign-in and sign-out process.
21. Ensure clients are not using cleaning chemicals.
22. Ensure the program is being cleaned and sanitized regularly.
23. Ensure that clients/visitors are smoking in designated smoking areas.
24. Complete documentation within a 24-hour time period.
25. Complete Patient Communications at the end of each shift.
26. Complete 6 CEUs annually and complete monthly supervision with assigned
clinician.
27. If approved by Risk/Compliance, provide local transportation.
28. Other duties as assigned
