Position Overview
The Assistant Controller reports directly to the Controller and supports them in overseeing the accounting operations of the company. This role is crucial for producing accurate periodic financial reports, maintaining a robust system of accounting records and ensuring a comprehensive set of controls to mitigate risk. The Assistant Controller helps enhance the accuracy of reported financial results and ensures compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
Essential Functions
Financial Reporting & Control (25%)
- Assists the Controller in guiding financial decisions by developing, implementing and maintaining accounting policies and procedures to ensure fiscal discipline and a strong internal control environment
- Contributes to providing the status of financial condition by collecting, interpreting and reporting financial data
- Supports the direction and coordination of accounting department workflow, including month-end closing processes and reconciliations of various systems
Journal Entry & Financial Statement Review (25%)
- Reviews and approves journal entries and month-end close work papers in accordance with GAAP and company policies/procedures for areas including cash, prepaid expenses, accrued expenses, intercompany and other miscellaneous asset and liability accounts
- Assists in the analysis of accounting operations for acquisition targets and supports the integration of successful transactions
- Aids in the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements, statistical and management reports for senior management, operations and investors
Audit & Reconciliation Support (20%)
- Coordinates and reviews year-end audit schedules and supporting schedules as needed for quarterly tax estimates
- Provides support for the annual audit process and works with auditors
- Serves as a liaison to operations management, assisting with accounting-related issues
- Assists in assigning balance sheet account reconciliation responsibilities, reviews reconciliations and oversees research to clear reconciling differences in a timely manner
Staff Development & Project Support (20%)
- Assists the Controller in maintaining financial staff by participating in recruiting, selecting, orienting, training, coaching, counseling and disciplining employees; supports planning, monitoring and appraising job results
System Interface & Problem Solving (10%)
Qualifications
Work Experience
- A minimum of seven years of progressive public or relevant private accounting experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- At least two years of experience in a supervisory capacity, including managing a team of approximately five
Knowledge
- Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and the ability to apply them
- Strong knowledge of general ledger and information systems, preferably with system enhancement and conversion experience
Skills
- Ability to apply general accounting theory to day-to-day processes and financial statement presentation
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment adhering to strict deadlines
- Ability to maintain confidential information
- Strong analytical skills and problem-solving ability
- Computer proficiency and technical aptitude with advanced functionality in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook) and various accounting and HR/payroll technology applications
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively address all levels within the organization
- Proven leadership and team development skills with the ability to guide and mentor a team of accounting professionals
- Ability to exercise considerable judgment and discretion in dealing with matters of significance
- Ability to represent the company effectively in diverse settings, demonstrating an understanding and appreciation for diverse cultures
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business policies, procedures, equipment manuals, training materials and corporate communications
- Ability to compose professional internal and external business communications
