The Position
Job Summary: The Controller will oversee the financial operations of the company, ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations and financial standards. This role involves managing the accounting department, preparing financial reports, and implementing policies and procedures to maintain financial health and integrity.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Planning:
- Provide strategic financial management and leadership, including developing policies and strategies to optimize the use of the organization's capital and other assets.
- Collaborate with executive management to develop financial strategies and plans.
- Participate in long-term planning and decision-making processes.
Financial Management:
- Oversee financial planning, budgeting, and reporting specific to health insurance operations.
- Manage the preparation of financial statements and ensure compliance with GAAP, STAT and healthcare-specific regulations.
- Monitor and analyze monthly operating results against budget and provide variance explanations.
Financial Reporting:
- Prepare and present financial reports to senior management and the board of directors.
- Provide insights and recommendations based on financial analysis and trends.
- Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting to stakeholders.
Supervision:
- Lead the accounting department, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and billing, with a focus on healthcare finance.
- Manage and mentor a team of 8 financial professionals, providing guidance and support for their development.
- Conduct performance evaluations and address any performance issues.
Internal Controls:
- Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard the company's assets and ensure the accuracy of financial records.
- Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations such as HIPAA.
- Develop and enforce policies and procedures to enhance internal controls and reduce risks.
Tax and Audit:
- Oversee tax reporting and compliance, as well as manage the annual audit process, focusing on healthcare-specific financial issues.
- Coordinate with external auditors and ensure timely completion of audits.
- Prepare and review tax filings to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure all financial operations comply with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Work with internal and external auditors to ensure compliance and address any issues.
- Stay updated on changes in healthcare regulations and implement necessary adjustments.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or MBA preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in accounting or finance, with at least 5 years in a leadership role within the healthcare or insurance industry.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, STAT, and healthcare-specific regulations.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Proven ability to lead and develop a team.

Physical Effort & Working Conditions
Work is performed remotely (home office) or in a normal office setting in our Overland Park, KS headquarters with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards. There will be occasional travel to other company locations or industry events. Substantial time is spent working on a computer.
