PART-TIME SEASONAL GARDEN ASSISTANT
(March 23 – Nov 20, 30 hrs/wk)

Reports To: HEAD GARDENER
Important Note: Experience using small tractors and walk-behind tillage equipment is a baseline requirement for this role.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the cultivation of four acres vegetable, along with some fruits.
- Assist as well in the care of a chicken flock.
- Creating planting beds.
- Starting seeds; planting transplants; weeding and cultivating beds; being on the lookout for pests.
- Maintain the general landscape around the garden area; spread mulch.
- Maintain garden equipment including but not limited to irrigation system, hoses, hand tools.
- Participate in the composting program, harvest produce.
- Maintain and operate equipment including lawn mowers, line trimmers, small tractors (including offset tractors), and walk-behind tillers.
- Other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
- An ability to operate and maintain farm equipment including tractors and mowers.
- Knowing how to check motor and hydraulic oil.
- Knowledge of how to use tillage equipment in a vegetable production environment, including maintain and keeping sharp attachments.
- A deep interest in growing fruits and vegetables.
- The ability to work hard in sometimes challenging outdoor conditions (e.g., hot and humid).
- An attitude which embraces outdoor work.
- A love for nurturing plants.
- Some knowledge of basic cultivation principles.
- A can-do attitude. Willingness to go above and beyond and be the best person you can be.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to bend, lift, kneel, and twist. Must be able to lift up to 70 pounds occasionally. Must be able to walk, sit, and stand for long periods of time. Occasionally work during the rain. Must be able to work outside in various climates. Must be willing to work in the soil and perform tasks required of gardening including planting, tilling, weeding, harvesting. Must be able to use hand tools and ride-on mechanical tools including mowers and tractors. Must be able to operate walk-behind tillers as well as line trimmers and backpack blowers
