Argonne National Laboratory is a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory conducting world-class research to address the nation's energy, environmental, and security challenges. University Student Programs within Institutional Partnerships develop the next generation of STEM problem solvers through internship programs, student employment experiences, and graduate research opportunities, engaging over 1,200 university students annually across 30 different programs.

Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a Summer Community Director within the Institutional Partnerships Division to help support and foster an inclusive community for students residing in Argonne’s Guest House. This is a short term role from May 2026 - August 2026 during our summer internship program.

The Summer Community Director will live in student housing and create a safe and engaged residential community. Various activities may include supporting orientation, hosting after-hours and weekend social events and activities, hold community meetings, and maintain on-call rounds and office hours.

In this role you can expect:

Student Success and Community Engagement:

  • Organize and lead recreational, networking, and community building activities that contribute to the engagement and development of students.
  • Hold regular resident check-in meetings, as well as a first week in-person meeting for all Guest House residents.
  • Cultivate a positive and supportive culture and build professional relationships with students residing in the Guest House.
  • Refer students to Argonne on-site resources.
  • Uphold student behavioral expectations and ensure students are always following Argonne’s Core Values.

Incident Management:

  • Listen, observe, triage, report, and document any wellness or behavioral concerns or issues involving Guest House students.
  • Serve as primary response person for student incidents occurring in Argonne’s Guest House, including but not limited to mental health concerns and roommate conflicts.
  • Ensure understanding of Argonne’s incident management protocol.
  • Collaborate with other Argonne personnel during incident management, including senior leadership, University Programs & Partnerships, ANL Fire Department, and ANL ProForce, and others, to ensure a coordinated response.
  • Provide follow-up with students impacted by incidents; assess current state and needs.
  • Participate in an on-call responsibilities during evenings and weekends.

Other Functional Responsibilities:

  • Perform essential live-on duties, including conducting rounds of the Guest House, managing office hours, and carrying on-call cell phone.
  • Participate in directorate and/or department meetings and 1:1s.
  • Assist with Lab-wide events that impact summer students, e.g. student orientation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

  • PA1: Bachelor’s Degree and pursuing a Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Personnel, or closely related field, with at least one year of student affairs/student personnel experience strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated graduate-level residence life experience, supervising student staff, or student affairs
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, leadership, and Security (ProForce)
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends
  • Ability to work from mid-May to mid-August
  • Ability to prioritize tasks independently
  • Ability to model Argonne's core values of impact, respect, integrity, safety and teamwork.

Working Conditions:

  • Live full-time in Argonne Guest House on campus in Lemont, IL. Community Director staff are required to live in the Guest House during the duration of employment. Housing is included.
  • Standard work hours will vary dependent upon weekly on-call schedule.

The expected hiring range for this position is $52,445.00 - $82,748.25.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as, but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
