Full-time Description

The Engineering Department Manager provides strategic leadership and oversight of the Engineering Department, ensuring operational excellence and alignment with organizational objectives. This role combines technical expertise with team leadership, driving efficiency, accuracy, and innovation across all engineering functions. The Manager is responsible for building and developing a high-performing team, enforcing best practices, and ensuring seamless coordination with Operations, Fabrication, and Project Management to deliver successful project outcomes.

Department Leadership & Talent Development

  • Provide strategic direction, oversight, and workload delegation within the Engineering Department.
  • Lead recruitment, onboarding, and professional development of engineering and design staff.
  • Establish and enforce workflows, protocols, and standards to drive efficiency, innovation, and quality.

Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Review and validate shop drawings, construction documents, and submittals for accuracy and compliance.
  • Ensure material quantities align with project estimates and budgets.
  • Safeguard the clarity and precision of field dimensions, releases, and related documentation.

Technical & Operational Excellence

  • Oversee the preparation of shop drawings, fabrication drawings, and CNC programming.
  • Convert field dimensions into fabrication-ready designs and create as-built drawings post-project.
  • Manage material procurement and coordinate tracking with the Logistics Supervisor and Plant Manager.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Project Managers to provide design/layout support and technical expertise during installations.
  • Lead new project kickoff meetings with PMs, drafting staff, and field teams to ensure accurate information transfer.
  • Contribute to company-wide progress meetings, supporting strategic problem-solving and operational efficiency.

Strategic Coordination & Information Flow

  • Act as liaison between Engineering and Fabrication to align release dates and delivery schedules with project needs.
  • Ensure accurate and timely transfer of data, dimensions, and as-built applications within the department.
  • Supervise electronic file management to maintain consistency, accessibility, and compliance.

Professional Growth & Industry Engagement

  • Stay current on best practices, innovations, and technologies through workshops and training.
  • Leverage and optimize project management software (Spitfire) to improve departmental performance.
  • Serve as a strategic partner to leadership, contributing to company goals, client satisfaction, and long-term growth.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of management experience with proven success leading engineering or design teams.
  • 5 years of drafting experience, with strong technical expertise in shop drawings and construction documentation.
  • Advanced construction field experience, with the ability to bridge design and field execution.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to think and visualize three-dimensionally.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office Suite; ability to learn new software platforms quickly.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or a related technical field preferred, but not required.
  • Exceptional organizational and communication skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve issues tactfully and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Commitment to honesty, integrity, and accountability with a strong drive to succeed.
  • Willingness to “roll up sleeves” and contribute at both strategic and hands-on levels when needed.
  • Strong positive attitude and team-oriented mindset.
