This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Office of the Chief of Operations, Executive Director of Facilities Operations US Capitol Building, Assistant Superintendent Tenant Services and Facility Operations Division, Maintenance Branch, Sheet Metal Section. The incumbent is a Sheet Metal Mechanic Supervisor with full supervisory responsibility for control over work operations and subordinates and is responsible to superiors for the quality and quantity of work performed.

Tour of Duty: Monday - Friday (3:00am - 12:30pm) Hours May Change Due to Operational Needs of Management
Supervisory and Managerial Responsibilities:
Participates with the Branch Chief in the initial planning of current and future work schedules, staffing needs, estimates and recommendations as to scheduling projected work.
Plans use of subordinate workers' equipment, facilities and materials on a week-to-week or month-to-month basis. Establishes deadlines, priorities and work sequences and plans work assignments based on general work schedules, methods and policies set by higher level management. As required, coordinates work with supporting or related work functions controlled by other supervisors. Determines the number and types of workers needed to accomplish specific projects. Determines how many assignments can be done concurrently, which ones can be delayed and the number and types of employees needed, considering skills, personnel, material and equipment available and required. Redirects individual workers and resources to accomplish unanticipated work and/or equipment failure, etc. Informs the Branch Chief of the need to revise work schedules and re-estimates labor and other resources. Performs administrative and technical supervisory functions for subordinates. Assigns duties and evaluates performance. Manages the organizational unit’s budget and workload. Develops performance requirements for subordinates and ensures a mutual understanding of the performance standards. Resolves complaints and grievances.
Plans and establishes overall leave schedules. Determines training needs of subordinates and arranges for its accomplishment. Sets performance standards and makes formal appraisals of subordinate supervisors' work performance. Approves subordinates’ recommendations for promotion or reassignments of their staffs. Promotes positive work environment and the participation of employees in such programs as the suggestion program. Maintains production reports and records.

Utilizesa thorough knowledge of and compliance with applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Office of Congressional Workplace Rights, and AOC safety rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner and to initiate or take corrective action on unsafe conditions in managed areas. Provides or receives training, either on the job or in a classroom setting, to ensure all direct reports know how to use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Routinely checks to verify that subordinates are using all required PPE.
Sheet Metal Mechanic Responsibilities:
Plan, lay out and develop templates and patterns to construct, assemble and install irregular items and systems. The sheet metal items and systems used by sheet metal mechanics at this level have various combinations of features including: cornices, canopies, transition elbows and oblique, truncated or frustum cones. The metal fabrication items and systems used at this level have various combinations of features including: railings, ramps, cages, platforms, stairs, bollards, guardrails and ladders.
Evaluates damage and/or wear to sheet metal and metal fabrication components and systems. Disassembles, repairs, fabricates, assembles, and installs sheet metal and metal fabrication components. Uses various measuring tools to measure size, angles, and patterns for repair, replacement, and/or modification.
Plans and lays out templates for construction and repair of components for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning duct work, kitchen equipment and exhaust hoods, and copper roof components, metal fabrications, and steel components.
Checks system to determine component faults and to identify sheet metal and metal fabrication pattern requirements. Lays out, cuts out, and forms sheet metal material according to patterns. Uses welding, riveting, soldering, mechanical fasteners, forming machines, hand-held plasma torches, MIG, TIG, and ARC welding, and other tools of the trade to join, assemble and repair sheet metal, roofing and metal fabrication components.
