What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Electrical Engineer - Board Design & Integration position at Architect Motors?
About Architect Motors
Architect Motors is on a mission to revolutionize personal transportation in the developing world with a purpose-built electric motorcycle that combines cutting-edge engineering and tailored financing solutions. We benefit from the agility of a startup without the uncertainty of traditional venture capital, backed by stable, long-term funding. Our founders, alumni of MIT, UNSW, McKinsey, and Y Combinator, bring decades of EV development and production expertise to the table. With ten years of hands-on experience across emerging markets, we’re uniquely positioned to deliver world-class electric mobility that’s both accessible and sustainable.
Role Summary
We’re building a new, affordable, lockable electric motorcycle for the developing world — and your role will be to design the electronics that make it secure, connected, and production-ready. As our Electrical Engineer (Board Design & Secure Hardware Integration), you’ll lead schematic and PCB design for our microcontroller secure control boards, integrating wireless connectivity (BLE, GPS, cellular) and physical anti-tamper features. You’ll work closely with the embedded software, and manufacturing teams — as well as external vendors — to take designs from concept through prototype, validation, and production.
This is a hands-on hardware design role with significant responsibility for architecture decisions, component selection, and integration across multiple electronic subsystems.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop mixed-signal circuit boards for embedded microcontroller and security chip systems
- Own Schematic design, PCB layout, and bring-up for production-intent control and communication modules
- Integrate wireless subsystems such as BLE, GPS, and LTE modems with secure microcontrollers
- Implement design practices that enhance physical and electronic tamper resistance
- Interface with external hardware vendors and manufacturing partners to integrate our modules into third-party boards
- Collaborate closely with firmware engineers to define interfaces, test plans, and system-level behavior
- Conduct board bring-up, validation, and debug using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other diagnostic tools
- Generate and maintain detailed design documentation, BOMs, and revision control data
- Support certification and production readiness activities (e.g., EMI/EMC, safety, reliability)
Minimum Qualifications
- 5 years of professional experience in electronic circuit and PCB design for embedded systems
- BS in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering, or equivalent industry experience
- Proven experience with microcontroller-based hardware, power regulation, and mixed-signal design
- Proficiency with schematic and PCB design tools (e.g., Altium, KiCad, or equivalent)
- Experience integrating wireless communication modules (BLE, GPS, cellular) into compact embedded systems
- Familiarity with hardware security elements such as secure microcontrollers, cryptographic coprocessors, or TPMs
- Understanding of design-for-manufacture (DFM) and design-for-test (DFT) principles
- Strong debugging skills using oscilloscopes, multimeters, and protocol analyzers
- Ability to work on-site in Alameda, CA
- Legal authorization to work in the United States (Visa sponsorship not available)
Bonus Qualifications
- Firmware C/C development experience
- Experience designing electronics for automotive, mobility, or other rugged environments
- Familiarity with tamper detection, conformal coatings, or other physical security design techniques
- Experience with CAN bus, LIN, or similar vehicle communication protocols
- Background in functional safety or EMI/EMC design compliance
- Prior startup or early-stage hardware development experience
- Interest in motorcycles, EVs, or emerging markets
Pay & Benefits
- Competitive salary: $160,000–$200,000 (commensurate with experience)
- Employee stock options
- Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance
- 401(k) plan with company match
- 20 days of paid annual time off plus 11 paid holidays
- A collaborative, growth-oriented startup atmosphere with opportunities for advancement
Salary : $160,000 - $200,000
