Job Summary
The Senior Tax Preparer is responsible for preparing and reviewing individual and business tax returns, managing client communications, and supporting junior staff. The ideal candidate has strong technical skills, attention to detail, and experience working directly with clients in a public accounting environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and review federal and state tax returns for individuals (1040), partnerships (1065), S-corporations (1120S), C-corporations (1120), and trusts/estates (1041)
- Conduct client interviews and gather necessary documentation to complete tax filings
- Identify and communicate potential tax savings opportunities and planning strategies
- Ensure compliance with all tax laws and regulations
- Handle correspondence with IRS and state tax authorities as needed
- Mentor and support junior preparers or interns during tax season
- Maintain accurate and organized client records in the firm's tax software
- Stay current with tax law changes and industry trends
- 5 years of recent experience in tax preparation within a CPA firm or public accounting environment
- Proficiency with tax software (e.g., Lacerte, ProSeries, UltraTax, Drake, or similar)
- Strong knowledge of federal and state tax codes
- Experience with QuickBooks or other accounting platforms preferred
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines
- CPA, EA, or actively pursuing preferred but not required
