Summary

Having opened in the 2025-2026 school year and expanding into a new building in the 2026-2027 school year, St. Peter the Apostle Catholic School is seeking a dedicated team of faithful faculty and staff who desire to cultivate a love of learning and a love of the Lord through the richness of the Catholic intellectual tradition. The School Counselor supports the intellectual, emotional, and spiritual development of students by integrating counseling practices with the school’s mission to cultivate virtue, a love of God and neighbor, and a heart of service. The counselor partners with faculty, families, and administration to guide students toward personal growth and responsible decision-making grounded in Catholic teaching. The Counselor, under the supervision of the Principal, is employed to provide emotional, social, and personal counseling in keeping with the mission and vision of the school to support students’ continued development and flourishing.

General Requirements

  • Supports, upholds, and models the philosophy of Catholic classical education and the mission of the school
  • Acts as a witness to Gospel values by joyfully modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church
  • Supports and adheres to the policies and procedures of the school and of the Archdiocese of San Antonio, including the Religious Standards for Catholic School Employees
  • Takes a solution-oriented approach in their interactions and undertakings
  • Acts as a team player; promotes collaboration and commitment to the mission, vision, and culture of the school
  • Adheres to safety training and protocols on a daily basis, and takes precautionary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of self, others.
  • Perform duties consistent with the policies of the School and the Archdiocese of San Antonio Department of Catholic Schools
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Essential Functions

Student Support & Counseling

  • Implement a comprehensive counseling program to include classroom guidance, individual counseling, small group counseling, crisis counseling, and consultation services
  • Coordinate the campus guidance program in collaboration with campus administration and staff
  • Provide individual and small-group counseling to support students’ emotional, social, behavioral, and academic development
  • Collaborate with parents and develop programming that helps parents support their children through emotional, social, behavioral, and academic challenges
  • Guide students in developing self-discipline, virtue, and personal responsibility
  • Assist students in navigating challenges such as peer relationships, stress, and behavioral concerns
  • Support age-appropriate discernment and decision-making rooted in moral principles
  • Make referrals and follow-up with community providers/specialists as necessary to support student progress and school success.
  • Utilize data for campus counseling program evaluation and planning.
  • Maintain files and retain copies of request forms, release forms for records, follow-up records, observation reports, conference documentations, interactions with students, parents, and teachers, etc.
  • Keep administration informed in a timely manner of student concerns in accordance with school policies, policies of the Archdiocese, and in accordance with the ethical standards of the profession and licensure.
  • Provide consultation to campus administration and staff to effectively support their efforts
  • Attend discipline, attendance, and academic review committee meetings as needed
  • Keep all school matters and student documentation confidential.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Partner with teachers, administrators, and parents to support student well-being.
  • Communicate effectively with families regarding student needs and progress.
  • Participate in student support teams and faculty meetings.
  • Attend discipline, attendance, and academic review committee meetings as needed.
  • Provide referrals to outside resources when appropriate.
  • Provide consultation to campus administration and staff to effectively support their efforts to foster each child’s optimum academic, social, emotional, spiritual, and behavioral development.
  • Provide support and consultation to parents who may need skills to effectively support their child’s optimum academic, social, emotional, spiritual, and behavioral development.

Academic & Developmental Guidance

  • Support students in developing strong study habits and organizational skills.
  • Assist with academic planning and transitions between grade levels.
  • Provide guidance on goal-setting and personal growth.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in School Counseling or a related mental health field (licensure or certification preferred)
  • 5 years of experience in a school setting preferred (minimum 1 year of experience required)
  • Active TX school counselor certification preferred
  • Practicing Catholic living in accordance with the teachings of the Catholic Church
  • Understanding of Catholic classical education preferred
  • Deep understanding of child development, particularly for children aged 3-14
  • Must have good critical thinking and problem-solving skills
