POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position: Maintenance Technician

Department: Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart

Reports To: Maintenance Supervisor

Classification: Non-Exempt

General Description

Under supervision, the Maintenance Technician will perform necessary repair related to the Cathedral, the residence, and equipment, preventative and general maintenance, in addition to maintenance of all the surrounding grounds.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities

The following specific responsibilities are representative of the duties required in this position. They may be unilaterally but reasonably changed based on the working environment and departmental needs.

• Performs assigned general (heavy) housekeeping, including waste and rubbish collection, cleaning and buffing.
• Performs ground maintenance such as mowing lawns, trimming hedges, removing weeds, and raking and disposing of leaves and refuse.
• Paints, repairs masonry, plumbing, and furnishings of the building.
• Transports trash and waste to disposal area.
• Moves office furniture, file cabinets, and other related items.
• Changes lightbulbs, ceiling tiles, carpet tiles, water filters, air filters for HVAC units.
• Performs snow removal and related ground duties as assigned by supervisor.
• Provides patrol presence in conjunction with Cathedral events.
• Accepts and tallies deliveries, stores and maintains supply stocks.
• Set up tables and chairs, conference rooms, whenever necessary.
• Uses and understands the purpose and nomenclature of hand and small bench tools.
• Understands and applies safety precautions, operating instructions and devises (e.g. fire extinguishers).
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Skills

• Knowledge of and “hands on” experience regarding heating, cooling, plumbing, and electrical systems.
• Knowledge of masonry tools and materials preferred.
• Good organizational skills.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Good interpersonal skills.
• Handle heavy workload, if necessary.
• Valid NJ driver’s license preferred.

Education and/or Experience (Preferred)

• High School Diploma or GED
• 1-year related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
