Job Title: World Languages Teacher – Grades 9-12
Department: Academics
Reports to: Principal, Director of Curriculum and Instruction
Job Summary:
The World Languages Teacher is responsible for fostering a dynamic and immersive classroom environment where students develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the target language. The teacher will cultivate an appreciation for diverse cultures and histories while emphasizing real-world communication skills. This position requires a passion for language acquisition, cultural exploration, and innovative teaching strategies that engage students in meaningful ways.
World Languages Course Offerings:
Spanish I-IV / AP Spanish Language and Culture
French I-IV / AP French Language and Culture
Latin I-IV / AP Latin
Additional language courses as offered
Primary Roles and Responsibilities
Plan and implement rigorous and engaging lesson plans aligned with ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) Standards and AP curriculum (if applicable).
Teach designated course sections and contribute to school-wide academic and extracurricular programs.
Design and deliver interactive and immersive lessons that encourage students to develop proficiency and confidence in the target language.
Use data effectively to assess student growth and adjust instruction accordingly.
Foster a classroom culture of respect and appreciation for language learning and global perspectives.
Utilize technology, real-world connections, and authentic materials to enhance language acquisition and cultural competency.
Communicate effectively with parents and families to support student progress and success.
Support the Catholic Identity of the school and integrate values-based learning.
Participate in school-wide activities, including assemblies, service learning, and spirit events.
Be an active member of the Carroll adult learning community, including attending all faculty meetings and professional development sessions.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Teaching experience, preferably in an urban high school setting.
Fluency in the target language (Spanish, French, or Latin preferred).
Certified to teach in MD, DC, or VA or willing to obtain certification within three years.
Demonstrates strong writing and communication skills, organization, collaboration, and adaptability.
Has a growth mindset and a commitment to differentiated instruction that meets the needs of diverse learners.
Dedicated to continuous professional growth and development.
Minimum Educational Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in World Languages, Linguistics, or a related field, with a commitment to social justice and working with high school students.
Minimum Experience Requirements:
Teaching experience and certification preferred; however, certification must be obtained within three years of hire.
Other Requirements:
Knowledge of the Catholic faith, beliefs, and practices, with an understanding of the educational mission of the Archdiocese of Washington and Archbishop Carroll High School.
