Job Title: English Teacher - Grades 9-12 Department: Academics Reports to: Principal, Director of Curriculum and Instruction Job Summary The English teacher is responsible for creating a classroom environment that develops in each student skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing that are fundamental to effective communication and literate citizenship; that develops an appreciation of good literature of all types; that motivates students to read widely for information and recreation; that develops standards for critical judgment of written and oral communications transmitted by mass media; and that discovers and develops special talents of students in the field of English. English Sequence of Courses: 9th: English 9 10th: English 10 11th: American Literature/A.P. English Language and Composition 12th: World Literature/A.P. English Literature and Composition Creative Writing College Writing Primary Roles and Responsibilities Plan and implement rigorous and engaging lesson plans in alignment with Common Core Standards, Pre-AP, and AP curriculum. Teach designated course sections, lead an advisory group, and participate in supervisory duties. Use data effectively to encourage and assess student growth and inform instruction Create a classroom culture built on respect, growth, and love of learning. Use engaging strategies and cooperative learning techniques. Communicate effectively with parents and families in order to best ensure student success Support the Catholic Identity of the school Participate in the life of the school including spirit, student activities, and Christian service Be an active member of the Carroll adult learning community, including attending all faculty meetings Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Has teaching experience, preferably in an urban, high school setting. Is certified to teach in MD, DC, or VA or is willing to gain certification within three years Demonstrates strong writing and communication skills, a capacity for organization and follow-through, collaboration, and flexibility. Has a growth mindset and a commitment to meeting the needs of every student in a diverse population. Is committed to his/her own learning and professional development. Minimum Educational Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in content areas they wish to teach, with a commitment to social justice and working with high school students Minimum Experience Requirements: Teaching experience and teacher certification are preferred, but the teacher will be required to be certified 3 years from the date of hire. Other Requirements: The ideal candidate must have knowledge of the Catholic faith, beliefs, and practices along with a thorough understanding of and commitment to the educational mission of the Archdiocese of Washington, and the vision of Archbishop Carroll High School. The candidate must possess a positive attitude; good communication skills, a collaborative leadership style; and sensitivity to working in a diverse, multicultural environment.
