POSTED ON 4/3/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 6/3/2026

Job Title

Tooling Coordinator (non-manager)

Reports To

Plant Manager

Summary

The purpose of this role is to acquire, improve, and maintain all necessary shop tooling to produce inserts.  It is also to identify and execute opportunities for improvement in quality and productivity as it relates to tooling.  The tooling coordinator is also responsible for ordering and maintaining the appropriate supply of all needed grinding wheels.

Duties and Expectations

The tooling coordinator has three main responsibilities and expectations (all of equal importance)

  1. The first is to make sure operators have all necessary tools and wheels available, in good condition, and readily accessible so that set-up times may be as short as possible. Set up time is defined as the time between the last good insert from the previous job to the 1st good insert of the current job.  This responsibility includes:
  • Order all replacement tools for all production areas
  • Inspect incoming tooling to ensure that it is to print and meets intended use
  • Ensure that tooling is correctly labeled, organized, and inventoried in each production area
  • Work with engineering to improve tooling where possible and design new tooling as needed
  • Keep records of repairs, replacements, and maintenance for tooling
  • Perform timely preventative maintenance on tooling
  • Utilize all available resources internally and externally to economize tooling maintenance as much as possible
  • Be involved in review of new tool designs with an expectation of quick tool change features
  • Ensure that tooling is designed and used to minimize cycle time; this includes ensuring that all insert stations are used in multi-space tooling

  1. The second expectation is that the tooling coordinator will identify jobs that are run regularly and improve the way we do it for productivity. This may include:
  • Using new wheel technology to increase throughput
  • Finding ways to reduce scrap
  • Better utilizing robot loading
  • Applying quick change tooling concepts
  • Any improvement that yields more pieces per hour

  1. The third responsibility is to be the manager of grinding wheel inventory. This includes:
  • Keep a running inventory of all grinding wheels
  • Become expert in where and how different grinding wheels are used
  • Order & stock replacement wheels so that production is never out of a wheel that is needed
  • Ensure that company cash flow is not tied up in excess wheel inventory
  • Work with process engineer to reduce wheel expense through new technologies, process improvement, and negotiation with vendors

Note:  This job deception is not intended to be all inclusive.  The employee may perform other related duties as negotiated to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.
